Cheaper Alternative to Van Hire?

Come on - no one is being moneysaving enough.
Get man with van, get in passenger seat get free trip to Glasgow!
I'll do it myself for £300 cash!
Diesel from my home to glasgow via B'ham £100 + £200 for my weekend.
The problem you may find with hiring someone, is that the time taken will probably mean that the driver has to take an overnight break, which will add a lot to the costs.
Have to borrow my van back off the parents though.
Just had a check of Thrifty website, £145 for the van - £100 for the diesel - no mileage limit that's from 9.30 on Saturday the 21st to 4.00pm on Sunday 22ndUnless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
How? A few years ago, I hired a 7.5t lorry in Hull, drove down to Letchworth, filled it full of my brothers house and drove back to Bridlington then delivered the lorry back to the hire company on Monday morning. Came nowhere near £500. In fact, I think it wasn't even half that.
Hell, a haulage company wouldn't charge £500 to move 24 tonnes of whatever up to Glasgow from Birmingham.
Well we were going off our postcode (in Tamworth) to Helensburgh, and then we were looking at the Mercedes Sprinter Maxus van (and that cost with an additional driver was £186.80 - we were looking at the bank holiday weekend at the end of the month, so it would have been hired from the Friday through to the Tuesday as we would have picked up an additional charge for 'special openings' as it's BH) then when online to try and find out a rough estimate for the miles to the gallon that the van does. We seen a few websites with them saying that they can do between 20-30 mpg, so we worked it out on 700 miles (as we need to add another 40-50 odd miles on as we need to get some extra bits from other houses) and then worked it out at doing 20 mpg. It worked out around £460-£480 I think (total for hire, additional driver and then fuel costs for both legs of the journey and all the extra bits needed inbetween), but just rounded it up just incase it was needed.mountainofdebt wrote: »If you do get a man with a van I'd be tempted to make sure your insurance covers you for giving your belongings to a stranger and trusting them to deliver it in one piece.
I don't like the sound of the man in a van idea to be honest, I wouldn't like both mine and my OH's belongings being shipped up there with a random!goldspanners wrote: »im sure you could hire a van out midweek for 24 hours for around £50, for a transit sized van. these vans are pretty economical and should give around 35-40 mpg on a run like this no problem. givig you around 500 miles per tank, a tank will cost around £70 - £80.
glasgow to birmingham is around 300 miles each way so say £100 on fuel being generous and the van hire at £50ish comes in much cheaper than your £500 price.
where did you get the £500 figure from?
See above from what I replied to Hammyman.
The problem is, as we are moving into military married accomodation, we have to do it the date that we get the keys free. Plus, my OH more than likely won't be there when I move into the house, so I need to get there on the day the house becomes available! They will tell us when the house is free and then we have to get it all arranged so we can move in that day (which has been requested for the last weekend in August).Became Mrs C on 14th of August 20100 -

The problem aswell with hiring someone, and them having to have to stay is the costs of putting them up! I wouldn't have them stay with me, so then that would mean shelling out for a B&B. Oh, I don't know how I will do it - but I shall get my stuff up there one way or another!Became Mrs C on 14th of August 20100 -
Have you worked out the size and weight that you will be trying to move and contacted a courier company? Its possible they will be able to take all apart from one suitcase in a couple of days before and then deliver when you notify them you have the keys.0

Not yet - I am in the process of sorting out what's got to be packed and then I will be sorting boxes. I know there will be too much for a transit, as I have a lot of personal belongings! It's a good job we asked for money and vouchers for the wedding rather than presents! That would have been even worse to get up there!Became Mrs C on 14th of August 20100 -
Have you been over to the military moneysavers board? I believe that the Army pays moving expenses anyway.
I'm unsure why you need the van for so long, or one so large?
Pick up Friday 9.00am run around and do your pick ups - drive to Glasgow. If you start on the way to Glasgow by 11.00am, you'll be there by 5.00pm. Move in. £40 for B and B, friend drives back to Tamworth, drops off about 2.00pm.
Size wise you will be shocked at what you can get into even a small van, I've moved my sisters whole house in a 7.5tonner, the sprinter is MASSIVE for what you are describing. Unless there is furniture in there, a compact van would do it. A Transit would be LOADS of room.
Cost is £140 for van (standard transit) If you drive sensibly and not like white van man, you will easily get 25mpg++++++, which is £150MAX, and more like £100
But do check out the military boardUnless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
Van hire near me is only £22 for the day with unlimited mileage
Or £86 for 48 hours, again unlimited mileage - that is for a Boxer van0 -

Whatever you decide to do to move your things, I hope you manage to easily and free from trouble.
I wish you a very safe and happy move and a quick settle into your new place

Put all your CDs onto your laptop then ebay the CDs...
OK so that's a pile no longer going with you...
Do a couple of trips with two suitcases and a rucksack each way...
that's going to cost under £100, the money on ebay form your CDs should cover that.
How MSE is that?:money:
Of course, if you could make some money in the time you would spend doing three trips between birmingham and glasgow, then work the extra hours and pay out for the pallet delivery thing.;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Try asking a removal company in the area you are moving to, they may be coming down south for a move and might be able to pick your stuff up on the way back when they have an empty van0
