I've been a fan of AutoGlym super resin polish for a while - unlike the standard wax polishes that puts a fine layer of resin on the surface which is obviously tougher than just a layer of wax. You get the same polish effect (which comes from the polish filling all the little pits and scratches) but because the surface is tougher it lasts longer.

Its not cheap but I guess if you need to apply it less often it may prove good value.

Autoexpress product winner this year was Comma Top Gloss Polish

    £3.99 for 400 mls.

I had a look in my local Halfords and Motor Save over the weekend and could not see any though.

Will need to check Motorworld next time out.

They leave the polish on for 6 weeks in all weathers on a bonnet from a scrappy.

  • Being a Harley owner, polishing is a priority for me.
I use Jofs Carnauba Wax Polish. This is a polish made by Harley enthusiasts in Newton Abbott. They do mail order.
I have discussed at length about polishes with various people, including motor yacht owners and have swapped quantities to try. Nothing I have tried has been as good as Jofs.
They sell it direct on Ebay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/JOFS-WAX-PRODUCTS - or walk into a Harley dealership but its twice the price in there.

  • You get what you pay for with car detailing products. I've used Autoglym for years but have switched to a better system, namely Poorboys. Best thing to do is buy a claybar which get the paintwork in tip top condition (do this about 4 times a year) then use a good sealant, followed by a polish and then a couple of coats of wax. Hard work but the results are amazing.

Er, isn't the Poorboys stuff cheaper anyway, once you realise you don't need so much! ;)

If you just want something from your local halfords, the Autoglym Super Resin Polish is pretty effective. If you get lots of dust from it (and everyone does) you're using too much. Topping that with Autoglyms Extra Gloss Protection will keep the colour/shine going longer.

Not the cheapest, or the best, but not a bad compromise. They often do gift packs, so you might get the two together for a bit less money.

Otherwise, I'm sure there's a valeter on here that sells trade products through a website. If you use it often enough that's probably the way to go.

I've had a quick look at both products mentioned. They both sound impressive. Could you tell me were you got your claybar from, how much, how many washes you can get etc?

I'm tempted but does look expensive and probably not worth it on my current car. The next one tho...... ;-)
  • I get my stuff though my own car club but the guy sells his stuff here: http://www.poorboysworlduk.co.uk/ although there's no clay bars on there. Meguirs do one that you can get from Halfrauds though.

As for washes. I do a full treatment every 3 months (using the claybar/polish/sealant/wax) then every two weeks I wash the car and give it another wax coat with these results:-

Polish is an abrasive so will remove any surface residue from the paintwork - including any protective layers. So after polishing it's important that you re-seal the body with a good wax. Like somebody mentioned, Carnauba wax is the hardest natual wax in the world. I use Harly wax which I got from EBay - it seems to be the cheapest carnauba wax out there and works a treat, forming a clear, hard layer over the paintwork.
  • Don't be fobbed off with a small number with of ebay sellers.

Must be why they use carnauba to coat tablets and sweets!
