I thought that if any of the wheels of the car being towed were touching the road, that it still had to have MOT (or road tax)?
thats the beuaty of the a frame,,the car is then classed as a trailer.and you dont need mot and tax on a trailer..as for the 750kg unbracked rule then yes stricktly speaking thats the case,in practice they useually turn a bling eye the plod..and strickly speaking if you had you average hatchback car weight 1500kg +trailer 500kg you would be exceding most vehicles max tow weight excepting 4x4..and chinquecento's 2cv matiz and several other small cars are under 750 kgs hope this helps....ck

And if you passed your test after 1/1/1997, you'd be driving outside the terms of your licence unless you'd taken a Category E test.

    Are you sure?

I can see the reasoning but if that is the case then it pretty much renders them all illegal as I suspect there aren't many cars under 750 kg.

Does it mean that only the little dolly things with wheels can be used?

had various meetings with the police and vosa on this subject 4 years ago when i was in the recovery game although its not policed much any car towed behind a car by meens of a ball hitch or pin hitch over 750kg is classed as a trailer and therefore must be braked (hence why AA and RAC dollys are braked.)

recovery agents are exmenpt ie spec lifts as the car is attached in a means as the car being towed becomes part of the towing vehicle.and not attached with a ball or pin hitch.

imo all these !!!!! dollys should be banned as the things are down right lethal.

Still mid £200's, so am just going to hire a trailer and get it myself. Sods law of course, that the only place near that hires car trailers is waiting for delivery of their new one, so as such cant hire me one, so its a 60 mile round trip (twice) to pick one up from m/boro.

A frame are not legal for towing that far, They are for emergency recovery only. You wont be able to use the motorway.

Recover to a safe place, One got pulled on the M42 near me, As soon as he passed the exit they stopped him.

They dont turn a blind eye, Its the luck of the draw.
