When you factor in your fuel, as it'd be a round trip, that quote is really £220ish. Factor in your own time and it's not that bad.

This is true. Although have worked out if I am to do it, it will cost approx £100 fuel, and £60 for trailer hire, time I have a lot of at the moment, so if I can get a price around that (ever the optimist!), im all good, otherwise its off down south I go.

North London to Sunderland is 580 mile round trip. That's going to cost £120 in diesel and take 10-11hrs to do. At the average cheapy rate up here of around £1 per loaded mile, its going to be around £300.

Totally agree, just hoping I may get a transporter with a spare space on a return, we can live in hope!

why not buy a A frame if you'v got a towbar..you can pick 1 up of fleabay for about the £140 mark..i've been useing 1 for years..bear in mind your average twinn axle trailer adds about 500kg to the car so the extra weight adds to fuel and strain on your car...ever had a problem with the plods because the towed car is the classed as a trailer so no mot tax insurance required..ck

assuming it will tow then the A frame is a good idea, ebay will sell you one for £100 or rent you one for £10 a day

or, if it's road legal and you have another driver available you could even buy a towing pole for £15 although, given the distances involved, I'd go for the frame

if you hire/borrow a recovery truck if over 3.5t you have to adhere to tacho regs and drivers hours.

A frames are ok but the towed car (now a trailer) must have a braking device fitted if over 750kg

trailers are the way to go as long as the towing vehicle is up to it for instance towing an average car safely you would need a large saloon 4x4 or a decent sized van.

as for those towpoles sold on ebay i would'nt tow a little tikes car with one.

    Are you sure?

I can see the reasoning but if that is the case then it pretty much renders them all illegal as I suspect there aren't many cars under 750 kg.

Does it mean that only the little dolly things with wheels can be used?

I thought that if any of the wheels of the car being towed were touching the road, that it still had to have MOT (or road tax)?
