Hi i'm hoping someone can help me out here
I've been off work for one week with severe toothache (i've got a broken wisdom tooth which seems to be making every other tooth ache at the same time) and my workplace are asking for proof that i am unable to work if i have any more time off, but i'm not to sure how to get proof can my gp give me a sicknote or fit to work note or whatever they are called now or can my dentist give me something, any help/advice would be fantastic, thanks

How soon before you have the tooth out?
i would have thought that the dentist would give you some sort of sick note but really not sure.
surely even after seven days you still only need a self cert?
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.
  • ask the dentist but I think it may have to be your GP :)
  • You can only self cert for 7 days. I don't know if dentists do sick notes. Ring your GP first thing in the morning.

i'm back at the dentists on wednesday but they did'nt say for sure if they would take it out on the day, think i will just pop in my doctors in the morning then and hope they can give me something, thanks all
  • Why are you off work with this? Hasn't the dentist given you anything?

I'm not having a go - far from it - twice over the past year I have had to have two wisdom teeth out because of the pain that they were giving me - the first one had complications (not the tooth but because of a birthmark I have) but it came out easily in the end with another dentist.

The original dentist packed it with a clove pack which worked wonders - unfortunately it wore off on christmas eve last year and I had to have an emergency app to replace it.

When the pain was at its worst (for both of them) I was taking 800mg of ibruprofen every 3 hours that was for a period of over a week as well.

I found the tablets the dentist gave me just didn't hit the pain at all.

Is there any reason why the dentist couldn't take it out next week?

Good luck - toothache is the worst pain and I totally sympathise with you!

Perhaps being at work would distract you from the pain? (or at the very least let work know how much agony you're in!!)

Have you got some strong pain killers? I would insist the dentist pulls it out on Wednesday! Why have you had to wait so long? I broke my wisdom tooth years ago, and got an emergency dental appointment to get it pulled out.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

i did'nt go to the dentist straight away as it was'nt that painful but then i noticed a small lump on my gum which was an abcess so i called in and he had a look and a little poke around my mouth he said i have a a wisdom tooth broken in two which did'nt look to great and another chipped tooth anyway he gave me some antibiotics for the abcess and i'm back in on wednesday so hopefully it will be taken out, i know it sounds stupid having time off work with toothache but i've never felt a pain like it plus it doesent help that i can't sleep to well as everytime i try and lie down the pain gets a whole lot worse, ibuprofen does help a little but it's only lasting 40 mins if i'm lucky, i've tried dissolvable paracetomol and just hold it over the sore tooth in some water but again it only easys the pain for a few minutes.

My local hospital has an emergency out of hours clinic for pain as bad as this. I expect the dentist wants te antiiotic to have had time to work before the next part of your treatment.

Ouch........ Tooth ache is the worst pain ever(esp if you've got an abscess) & and I've had 3 Babies.

In my experience, once the antibiotics have kicked in you'll start to feel a lot better.

You can take Paracetamol & ibuprofen together and can get the above with added codeine if necessary.

There are a couple of Dentists that post on the Heath board so they may be able to help with some advise on pain management.

AFAIK you will not be able to have the teeth sorted until the abcess has cleared. A friend of mine had this a couple of times and got the cert from her GP - it was a horrible time for her and she was already on a warning through lots of sick through back problems but she had no problems with this condition being certified by GP.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
