XP changing to Windows 7?

Without any prior warning I could not get any internet service yesterday,and as my boy has a router for his laptop[that had no probs],I spent over 45 minutes with Virgin Media[Indian call centre] trying all manor of things to find out the problem.Firstly finding out that virgin was OK ,left with the advice that either other router was faulty causing probs. or hard disc not working properly,and go to repair shop to sort out?
Then suddenly today I started getting internet service ,but very limited[have to www. every website individually and then lose it after use].
Then tonight I get a message from Microsoft that XP needs to be upgraded to windows 7 ,and printed off a 17 page instructions for a 2 hour job[beyond me].Has other people had this happen,as if it was well publisized I would have thought Virgin media tech department would know?

    So you tried to access internet via your son's router and it didn't work too well?
    Is your pc a pc or laptop? Have you tried a different ethernet cable? Checked drivers for ethernet/network adaptor up to date?

    Microsoft don't send messages to their customers telling them to upgrade from XP to 7. This looks like a scam of some type.
  • I've never heard of this happening with XP. I was fixing the neighbours laptop the other day and nothing flagged up about wanting windows 7 on it. His isn't capable of 7 as it hasn't enough memory. It's not a virus/ad thing is it?

    If you have it, run a virus scan to be on the safe side.

    Never heard of that happening, and I'm XP and will never change.

    Have you tried removing the router and seeing if it's fine as a straight-forward ethernet connection?

    Windows XP is not incompatible with any UK ISP that I know of, certainly not Virgin Media. You do not need Windows 7 unless you actually want it, there may be little to no benefit of you having it. There is some other problem somewhere with your service.

    Sounds more like a virus or malware.
    OP should download and run Malwarebytes antimalware.
    What security does the OP have?

    OP..HERE..Thanx for responses so far
    I have Virgin security ..no viruses showing.
    The windows advice seems genuine with a 3 minute video on how to do it;
    I have a EMACHINEcomp
    Whenever I turn on comp .I have this web address though.
    [EMAIL="CO118.public@14c?link=oln1l.redire"]CO118.public a 14c?link=oln1l.redire[/EMAIL]ct@CRC=1901212949
    Could this have been Virgin.media when they were trying to fix problem or is it somw thing more serious? as I have to keep typing the web address now everytime I use the computor.
    N.B The first 5 digits are differant everytime I log on,and sometimes 14c is 14 d

    The Windows advice is not genuine, it's a scam, your browser has been hijacked. You have a virus, you need to download and run MalwareBytes and HijackThis and post then logs for someone to look at for you.
    Look at the relevant sticky at the top of this board for instructions.
