    Just be aware the OEM verson is legally only allowed to be installed on that OEM machine. Swapping it to a new PC breaks the license agreements.. if you care :P

    Good point. Was before.

    Well it could effectively be the same machine. Just like in Only Fools And Horses where Trigger has had the same broom for 10 years, but it's had 6 different heads and 4 different handles.

    Your OEM version will clean install no problem. I bought an OEM version of XP with my Sound card and have taken it with me through 3 computers. The last reinstall told me I had to contact Microsoft as my OEM had been actiated 20 times. I called them and gave the large system number windows provided for me and all I was asked was how many computers I had installed it on. I told the guy it had been installed on 3 other computers and this was my 4th and he asked if it had been uninstalled from the rest. I told him it had and he gave me my activation code and reset my OEM key history so I can register it over the Internet another 19 times before having to go through them again.

    By the way he had dates and config Data for evey time my XP had been registered as he confirmed how many computers it had been on and even what upgrades where done to trigger the re-registration.
  • Thanks for that, I might just give it a go depending on which system I go for.

    Desperately trying to find the best value base unit I can with roughly the spec as below;

    Intel E6300 Core 2 Duo
    1 GB RAM
    200 GB Hard Disk
    Graphics card suitable for Photoshop, Illustrator etc rather than hardcore gaming

    Try and get the Gigabyte DS3 motherboard. It's a reasonably cheap Core 2 mobo, but allows easy overclocking should you want to try.

    I've got mine running at the speed of an E6600, it idles at 43C, 50C under load. ATI graphics cards are preferable if doing the above, as I've read nVidia cards somehow lock/restrict you from doing so.
