Transferring Windows XP to new computer

  • Well I reinstalled Windows XP on my old system and it didn't need re-activating, but obviously in a new system it will probably be different.

would it not be a better idea just to buy a new system with win xp preloaded?

  • haha yeah it would be, but when configuring a system it's looking at about £60 for Win XP which I'm not keen on adding if I can transfer my existing copy

ah you are building a system rather than buying a prebuilt system
Scottish proverb - "Never drink whisky with water and never drink water without whisky"
  • Well I'm looking at getting a prebuilt base unit only but have the option of having no operating system specified as opposed to Windows XP.. which would save around £60. I'm not sure if this will cause me more trouble than it's worth though?

I would probably get the Win XP preloaded it took end up costing you more for XP in the end. Suppose you could install it and still use it with the annoying popups asking you to activate windows.
Scottish proverb - "Never drink whisky with water and never drink water without whisky"
  • Well I'm looking at the possibilities - I'd rather get it pre installed but if I could save myself some money then I'm all for that!

I'll only use my existing copy if I can get it re-activated; don't want any annoying pop-ups or limited system functionality

should be any limited system functionabiltity, just annoying pop ups and you'll not be able to get windows updates. but windows will work.

  • Oh right, ok thanks :D

What do you mean by popups? The genuine advantage notifications?

I've installed an OEM version on another machine and it was able to update ok.
