As you say it is a very harsh lesson learnt - do not leave any money or valuables lying around.
Have you or any of ur house mates had friends around that could have taken the money? Or workmen in?
Its very sad that you will now have to be suspicious of everybody and consistently having to "hide" your property - the housemates that have nothing to do with your missing money will also be feeling awful as even though they are innocent they will feel as though blame has been cast upon them.
Not a nice situation all around - but you have to learn from it & move on.
feelin sorry for youBams xxxxx

I doubt that anyone will actually own up to having taken the money. But you might just get your money back if you sit down with everyone this evening and tell them that you're going to have one final look around the kitchen tomorrow morning before you go to the police. That will give the thief the chance to put the money back quietly without having to own up. People can be real cowards sometimes.0

Hi there, I'm sorry to hear your money has vanished - shame for you all really as it'll muck up the whole trust thing for you based on the actions of one person. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon. Take care.If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape 100 days of sorrow.......Chinese proverb

Helping themselves to your cash was a really dirty trick. I'm Sorry you can't trust your housemates, that is a really poor situation to be in. Hope you manage to salvage your holiday plans.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0

If we look at that approach I'll put £400pm into the house account, rather than say £380 and then spend £100pm on DIY materials... how selfish of me
Ahh but a dedicated-MSE housemate would say the £400 on account to essential unavoidable bills should take precedence over painting the house (presumably the landlord's house - his responsibility) pink, buying vases and being Linda Barker, someone obviously thinks like this if he's been onto you and the missing money suggests the same. I'd rather have all the bills money and not redecorate - but you've made that decision for him and he obviosuly does have a problem.
Although could have been someone's theiving mate looking for the coffee.0 -

Nope we own the house, and when we moved in it was a tip. Certainly not 'Linda Barker' touches, more like buying tiles, carpets, floor, paint etc. However a year later and a hell of a lot of £££s and time and it's now looking good. We've had no bills missed, they all get paid... we just don't need to put £400 in their each, £350-£380 would be enough
Shame that it's a mortgaged place, I can't just leave. Although I think I'm going to have to do something.£2 Coin Savings = £0.230 -
Well if you own it you want to keep it looking nice. Fresh paint etc.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0

How terrible!
Did your housemates know it was there? I would be tempted to pay in £240 to the bills account and say that you are short this month because of the theft. But then again if you share a mortgage with them it will be better to stay on good terms......
Hope the meeting goes well tonight let us know how you get on.....Saving for an early retirement!0 -

So YOU own the place and live with people you don't really trust and who manage the bills - WEIRD - not one of these could you buy a house with a stranger (psycho) set ups was it?
If he's mentioned it repeatedly regardless of whether he took the money - there is a problem there - and the housemate relationship - or co-morgageee has broken down - this is why people don't buy houses with strangers...0 -
Well the money should never have been taken, no matter what.
However was it agreed that you'd spend extra on making the place nice? If not then I can kinda see how the guy feels, perhaps splitting everything equally all the time would make more sense? After all he can't see how much you've spent on the DIY... I know that if I saw £20 "real money" less being put in the pot every week i know that would play on my mind more than the amount of effort/ money gone into DIY. That's just how I think.
As I started off though, no one has any right to STEAL your money (again echo the "there's no way it could've fallen/ moved posts" )Debts (Original 17/08/06):
