A word of caution here. A local road to me had a similar problem and the local residents campaigned for speed bumps. They got them.

Traffic still travels at the same speed but with 10 times the noise (think WUMPH, WUMPH as each car bounces over the raised tarmac). For some, this means they can't sleep with their windows open because at 3am someone will drive their van / lorry down the road with even more WUUUUUUMPH, BANG, CLATTER, CRUNCH, WHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMPH, SMASH, CLATTER, BANG.

i know what you mean. I am not in favour of them on residential roads and most other roads.
  • Or you could buy a hi-viz coat and stand on the roadside pointing a hairdryer at traffic and see what happens.

Cardboard cutout of a busty page 3 girl would slow drivers down.

Step 1: Design a petition signed by residents (don't need many)..

Make your name the first on the petition as this is who the council responds to.
Get as many signatures as possible.
Keep a copy. Cos seriously councils are rubbish at actually hanging on to items and will lose it.

Send a copy to your local councillors.

Organise a public meeting or do rabble rousing door to door.

One group of offenders are refuge vehicles; easy to spot for their sheer velocity.
Really? Rubbish lorries are not known for their speed, or their excessive quantity, unless you live near a tip. Did you not notice the traffic when you moved in? I don't like the lorries through our village, but it's the price we pay for being in a nice affordable area.

There was a man in the news who kept pressing the pedestrian crossing all day to slow down traffic in his village.

How many minor, serious, and fatal accidents have there been on this stretch of road in the last year, two years, and five years? Without this information you are unlikely to be taken seriously by asserting children are intimidated, or residents are shouting at cars. Politicians and council officers are going to want firm statistics.
    Been away for a while.

some very good ideas. the next meeting our local committee is september some time to look in more depth regarding most suggestions.

its a 30 mph road, but as its one way some drivers are tempted to break that limit by a significant amount. on some days you can even hear local residents shouting at car drivers to slow down...I have not resorted to this yet!

personally, I am in favour of a 20 mph zone in the area. I think there is a campaign twenty is plenty and it was useful to read their website. In addition a well publicised local campaign for residents and better signage will help. Will speak to councillors and MP regarding these issues and possibly some random speed monitoring this autumn. I was just astonished (I guess I shouldnt be) at the party politics from the councillor having a dig at the MP, not once or twice but thrice at the thrifty new world.

cut kids, hairdryers, old bangers for a chicane, painted bird boxes, tacks...have all been noted too :)

I dont believe children or anyone else should be intimidated by traffic. Respectful is more apt.
