how to slow speeding traffic?

Options
I have raised the issue of high speed rat running on our narrow residential road to my local councillor (labour on a labour council) and MP (conservative). I am particularly concerned for children who find it quite intimidating.

Already they seem to be making political points of budget cuts (what else do you expect?), however I am due to meet each in August. I dont want either to pass the buck and do nothing. Neither seem to be particularly imaginative at present.

Can people suggest low cost but effective ways to calm/slow traffic - maybe things they have done or seen?

thanks

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Park an old banger outside your house, then get your neighbours to do the same. This will create a cicane & a few 'tight spots'.

In a one-way street that I lived in close to a high street that had a lot of traffic, cars in an adjoining street used to actually shoot the wrong way up the street as a short-cut to bypass the tail backs - it had double lanes and they could see right up the road so knew there was no oncoming traffic or police/traffic enforcement. A traffic island was put in place which made that manouevre much harder because of the acute angle of the 2 roads.

Useful costings for different traffic calming measures available here. Google for local traffic calming action groups elsewhere in the country.

Your Council would probably be reluctant to consider anything less than some form of "area-wide scheme", since addressing the issue on an individual street merely serves to push to problem onto the next street.

Are they driving over the speed limit, or just faster than you would like?

    .

No problems with drivers going about their business, but its those driving in excess of the limit that are of concern and also to some extent those driving the wrong way.

One group of offenders are refuge vehicles; easy to spot for their sheer velocity.

some really helpful tips. I will go throught them all and prepare some inexpensive ways to tackle the problem.

Very large bird house/box on the corner of your property next to the road. Paint it yellow so it looks like a speed camera.
