ok so now I have found the people I would like to do my windows and doors. the quote is £5700... Can I ask them to do it for £5500?
If so please give me a script. I am horrid at bartering.

    what about something like:

"i've received other quotations but have been impressed with your service, etc, etc and would prefer for your company to carry out the work for me. If you were to get my order today would you be prepared to match it to a quotation I received for £5,500?".

The worse they can say is no but I doubt they would. Be assertive and confident :D
  • How will you be paying? If it is cash then you hold the best hand. No company will refuse a cash sale. If I were you, go straight in for 10%. Even if they barter, half way is 5% which is £285. Remember, you are doing them a favour by using them, not the other way. I recently had 5 windows replaced at the back of the house. They were all very large. It cost me £1000. It started off at £1350. But I offered cash as opposed to a cheque.
  • You all seem to paying a fortune for new windows. Have you considered the Jeld Wen range from Build Center, Travis Perkins etc and getting someone to fit them? Windows for my house (about 11 in total) are costing about £3500-£4000 and fitting at £150 a day. Even if they take a week to fit, it will only add £750 to the cost of the windows.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • Don't forget that if you don't use a FENSA registered company to fit the windows you will have to inform your local council who will come and inspect the work.

Fair point and one I'd forgotten :o

In my case, the building inspector is coming out anyway as we're having the windows done in the main house at the same time as an extension.

Thanks for the reminder - which was an important omission in my post.
