I've tried all the gears and it's the same, though my boyfriend got it into reverse and then managed to drive it down the street and back in 1st and 2nd, but it was revving like mad!
That sounds like the clutch plate is well & truly shagged.
If it has been slipping as you describe, the flywheel is also going to need skimming at the very least when the new clutch assembly is fitted.
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.

Now you come to mention it, it's been a struggle to get into 3rd gear lately.

with that extra info it sounds like a seized slave cylinder of actuator fork (depending on if cable or hydraulic?) allowing the clutch to be partially engaged all the time giving symptoms of slipping clutch.
the reason i say this is the way it will not go in to gears most o fthe time, the fact you BF got it to select some suggests the linkage is ok.
if the plate was well knackered then you would be able to select the gears but get no drive when releasing clutch.

This engineering expression has been in use for a good number of years. "Shagged" may be replaced by an alternative if desired, a word beginning with f springs to mind and it's use in this terminoligy is much more common.
However, there are three levels of "shagged".
    1. Shagged - still redeemable with a bit of work and minor expense.
    2. Well shagged - still redeemable with a lot of work and could be very expensive.
    3. Well & truly shagged - beyond repair, replace with a new one.
    :p
