what budget new/newish diesel car?

i will be looking towards buying after the new year either a new or upto 3 year old diesel car.
i would like it to be cheap to run,as in cheap yearly road tax, good on fuel, and has a good resale value.

the most i would spend is 8k.
any advice or reccomendations?

  • I am thinking a Golf TDI.....not bad residuals, well put together, good economy, and for 8k you could get a fairly nice one.

I myself, once I manage to get rid of the turbo nutter Volvo S60R I have, am looking at something like a Y-reg Golf TDI with around 80k on the clock.

Other options....Seat Leon diesel - its a Golf in different clothes....What about a Peugot 307 Diesel? Not bad
  • I'd back the SEAT Leon idea - VAG share platforms and components, so the Leon is, fundamentally, the same car as the VW Golf, Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia.

You should be able to get a well-specced Leon 1.9 TDi on a 53 or 04 plate for your budget, and you'll get a good quality, reliable and frugal car. Do also consider the Skoda Octavia, as it's a bit bigger and a bit cheaper.

Failing that, look at bread and butter motoring - Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Peugeot 307. There's millions of the things about and, while they're not that exciting, there's so much choice that you can find some real bargains.

thanks, are there any decent brand new diesel cars in that price range?
  • It depends on how you define 'decent' ;-)

the new Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 Multijet comes in under that limit, with a bit of negotiation, as does the Citroen C2 1.4 HDi. the Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi is probably a better bet.

That said, I'd go for the Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI - it's got a list price of about £9,500, but you should be able to get at least £1,000 off that - if you can't, tell me and I will!
