Pillion
OK this may sound totally stupid, but....
Does anyone know if bike riding instructors, teach a total novice, how to
safetly ride pillion?
I really want to be able to go out with a friend, but, being a wimp and never having ridden a bike before and it being a 1000cc heavy bike I would be riding on, I am worried that I will be too nervous to 'lean' properly and risk causing an accident, so I would, if possible, prefer to have some proper instruction.

erm never heard of pillion training? You just get on and go, don't do what my sister did to me and lean the wrong way, TBH if you're on the back just don't lean.Nothing to see here, move along.0

Just hold on and relax.0

you need to go with the bike, so you will have to lean in but just keep relaxed, its lots of fun - getting on and off elegantly is worth a practice lol'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0

I don't know of anyone who offers instruction.
May I suggest you go out with an experienced rider, preferably one who has advanced riding qualification. Hopefully he / she will be able to give you some reassurance. If you do not know such a rider, you might want to contact your nearest IAM motorcyclist group, where someone may be prepared to assist.
Riding pillion is not difficult. You should not try to lean, just relax hold on to the rider and try to relax. It is easier on a big bike where your weight will not be as significant as it would be on a lighter machine."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

LOL thats just what I am scared of doing!!! that and not leaning when I am supposed to!!
I have resisted riding until now because of the fear of causing an accident by doing/not doing this 'We can get over being poor, but it takes longer to get over being ignorant'

i love riding pillion but only with oh as hes a brilliant rider and i always feel safe with him. we went camping on the motorbike for our honeymoon, bavaria and back - much better than lying on a Caribbean beach, or it is in my opinion'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0

I always include pillion cover on my insurance but have never carried anyone yet. Only been riding 3 years and my current bikes the smallest I've had which doesnt help either for confidence.
Keep saying to the wife about going away for an overnight but as of yet, never done it.
Start in a straight line first, get to enjoy the bike, get used to holding whatever your going to be holding onto.0 -
Although I've got a bike licence I've only ever ridden pillion once and it hurt my throat...... I screamed like a girl the whole time!
I'm sure any decent instructor would take you out a couple of times and give advice on being a good passenger. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0
