Car insurance for 17 year olds

I can understand that threads like this come up constantly, I have searched and searched and read tens of threads!!
I am 17, on a provisional and learning, but am trying to get some quotes for when i have passed....
I don't want to be paying, or cannot afford to pay any more than 1.2k for insurance, and around 1800 - 2200 for the vehicle.
I understand that it would be easy to acheive the above on a classic policy, but want something newer, which would have some sort of safety features.
Wonder if anyone could give some of their own recent experiences, or some advice as to where to go???
Thanks in advance.

Do you have any particular vehicle in mind?
I'd suggest you try and stay away from the typical boy-racer type of cars. Sometimes more 'mature' cars such as a Ford Mondeo can be cheaper than the typical Saxo/Fiesta/Corsa.
I suggest you use comparison websites, phone up insurers and play them off against each other and make sure you add your parent(s) to the policy as named drivers.
I passed my test 4 months ago aged 20 and I moved onto my own policy with a 2004 Seat Ibiza 1.2 for £1200 fully comprehensive, and that's with a very good postcode too!0 -
Thanks, i have no vehicles in mind ATM tbh, just not an old thing, with no safety...
I have been looking at things like mondeos, and vectras, and the cheapest i have got is 2.5k from Quinn!!!

Are you male or female?
Male, no more than £1.2k on insurance? Jog on.0 -
Male.
Surely it can be done0 -
And a mondeo or vectra is too high a group for 17 year old new drivers, which is why the quotes will be high if you can get them. At the end of the day insurers will quote what they want for the risk they are taking on which is an inexperienced young male driver, who statistically have the highest number and most costly accidents (not necessarilly own damage but cost of third party claims).
Highly unlikely to get any cover for £1,200 - those sorts of premiums are charged for very low risk areas - think country areas like Devon and Cornwall or the offshore islands. At the end of the day you have to pay what the insurer wants for the risk you present rather than what you want to pay.0 -
Having insured my ds 17 in march on a 206 1100 engine, you havent a hope in hell of getting insurance for 1200 pounds and then 1800 to 2200 on the vehicle, more like add the 1200 and the 2200 together for the insurance just to start with and then have nothing left for the car. Insurers dont want 17 year olds on the road full stop and so will quote thousands as they do not want your business. Good luck anyway because your going to need it. Sorry to be so negative but been there and done that.0

Looks like an old LandRover is a possibility then0

You want something with a small engine I think, a V8 isn't going to lower your potential insurance :-)
Do some research on the comparison sites, put in the details of different cars and see what it says. Insurance goes on you, your area and your car, so you really need to get figures from the companies involved. The quotes are free, they just take a bit of time.Aiming to be debt & mortgage free by November 2018!0 -
old LD Defender is a good car to start off with, nice and slow and safe for you, plus actualy quite cool. Not cheap on the fuel though and you will have to get used to getting your hands dirty. It won't be as cheap to insure as it might have been a while ago though - you can do a lot of damage with one!
*edit, clearly not a V8! - assumed the poster meant an classic one or a drev
Your best bet is probably an 1990's era old shape mini for something cool (though not with modern safety features, or a 1.0 - fiesta or older yaris, but you might struggle with your car budget. One thing to look at is the skoda felicia 1.3 - the first VW skoda I think, and actualy surprisingly good. Look for a post 1998 one when it was done up a bit. The Matiz is just about the cheapest thing you can insure, but it is also probably the most hateful machine ever built.
Look to spend less on the car to budget for the insurance. If you are struggling with that amount of cash, then remember you will probably need to find cash for servicing let along anything that goes wrong in the first couple of years with anything you are buying at that price - so think about budgeting for that.0
