If the oil light comes on its already being damaged through lack of oil.

When the orange light comes on, the damage has already been done.

And not just to one part.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

To late to fill the engine up when the oil light comes on, you would need to stop the second it came on to have any chance of saving the engine.

Regards your car OP, not worth it on a 'S' reg car, best place for it is the local scrape yard - looking at the moment around £80-£90 for it.

Also, driving without a drivers side mirror could get you, or anyone else driving it a instant ticket from the Police, depending how well there day is going!

How do you know the scrapped car wasn't junked for similar engine issues? As suggested, spend £250/£300 on a replacement engine + labour cost which would come with a 3 month warranty at least. Assuming you decide its economically viable to spend that cash on a 12 year old fiesta.

If your car suddenly loses oil, you've got around 10 seconds to turn it off. If it's gradual then im afraid the damage often goes undetected until its too late.

Niece said it was making a 'banging' noise and chugging up hills last week.

I always check the oil and water ever month as I drove a lot of miles in that car.

She said the oil light went on last week!!!! Mind you she also rang me to say the fuel guage was stuck on 'below empty' - until she put petrol in it that is!!

Her mum and I did have a joke about how long it would take for her to 'kill' it!

Sounds like she would benefit from using public transport if that is how much respect she shows.;)

    It's not about respect :(

It's about being brought up with other people doing EVERYTHING for you.
