T-mobile telling lies when buying phone....a cautionary tale
I bought a new T-mobile phone last week, Samsung Galaxy Portal, but before I went through the on-line purchase I checked via T-mobile on-line chat assistance, what version of Android it had.
I was told 1.5 (which is a bit outdated and a concern when taking a 24 month contract - if they don't upgrade it, where will it stand in 12/18 months?).
So I asked if it could be upgraded to 2.1 (3 mobile have upgraded their phones to 2.1 apparently). I was told it could and that I could upgrade it as soon as I received it.
I double checked and explained that it was an important part of my buying decision.
The chat person confirmed that I would be able to upgrade to 2.1 immediately.
I've got the phone, and it cannot be upgraded to 2.1. I went into a T-mobile shop today and was told the upgrade would not be available until October, and was told that there's no guarantee that will happen either.
Ho-hum. It will be going back tomorrow under the 7-day return rules. I doubt I will bother with T-Mobile after this.

It can be upgraded. You can do it yourself by flashing the 2.1 firmware to it.

But why should we have to do it ourselves, it should be be by the OEM within a reasonable amount of time following the release of the new version.
But they don't which is why to ordinary folks, Android appears to be so fragmented. Just gone through this with the HTC Hero, so I know where your coming from.0
