Wife 74 June 2010 has TVL given us a bonus?

Our licence expired at the end of July, so as my wife will be 75 before it expires, when the new (2010/11) one arrived, I contacted TVL.
We pay by monthly DD and by its rules have paid ~50% of the new licence's cost. As there are some 10 months from its start date to wife's 75th, I had expected to pay a proportion of the year, but to my surprise TVL has sent a free licence and are refunding the ~50% to me.
Has TVL made a bloomer, and what is my position, if they have?
