Trains! We always go to Cornwall by train. Much more fun than being stuck in the car, book ahead and it doesn't cost a packet, and you can entertain yourself much more easily on a train (and get up, walk around, go to the loo, all sorts of handy things).

There are lots of places you can still hire sailing boats - what sort of dinghies do you like? I'm a Laser fan myself, but they aren't for those determined to stay dry (-:

Yes to the train I suppose. Yesterday got a call from a friend who was at The Eden Project. They had their car to go exploring and visiting the sites which to me seems like an advantage.

TBH though, my next holiday will be in Portugal in 2011, providing it's not gone into economic meltdown. Need a hot, golf, tennis, beach, swimming, good night-time restaurants 2 week holiday - before a significant UK holiday involving lots of travelling about from area to area. Can justify that type of holiday to myself for not been abroad for 9 years.

Ahh it looks like you possess a much higher level of sailing dinghy knowledge and skills than me, NDG. The basic public hire ones at Lytham St.Annes are the only ones I've got any experience of. And only then, years ago with a few visits under instruction of a relative (tacking). Can't go too far wrong on a very shallow lake even if my knowledge memory has faded a bit.

I've got someone here pressuring me to go on to the Norfolk Broads (4 hours drive away) for a week - and it really appeals to me. A sailing boat would be out of the question though, unless taking proper instruction and qualifications beforehand. Not going to deliberately put myself in a position of having Frank Spencer type mishaps or causing dangers to others through ignorance.

the Broads are great fun, but not a good place to sail as a beginner. Lots of it's very narrow, other parts are tidal, etc. But I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time!

We do hot when we visit Israel. Not really beaches, much (too much sun) but a lot of hot-ness!

    I apologise immediately....err.. mate.

as you say: shedloads to do in the UK but unlikely to bring on a sun-tan - people will tolerate ryanair just to get one.

    :):D

    Not a bother!
My gender has caused some debate on a few threads previous, & becuase the debate usually is quite funny, I've never disclosed which I am...;)

    No offence taken, nor meant.:)
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

The seaside doesn't smell like it did when I was a youngster, the aroma of salt, cockles etc seemed unique, now the smell is just like anywhere else, or maybe it is just my imagination.

It's weird how certain smells conjure up your life. Nothing else works quite the same way.

New mown grass that's always home for me. Sawdust brings back my Da and musty auld books my grandfather. The smell of horses always makes me feel like a child again.

I love the smell of the sea, you drag it into your lungs and when you let it go you just feel different. More alive.

I have never eaten cockles though and dont intend to start.

I still like the British seaside. I went to Brighton for a day trip in June - £4 return from London with rail card. Got them way in advance.

We picked the perfect day to go (well would have been better without a hangover from the BBQ night before). The weather was gorgeous, the beach was busy, but not too busy. There wasn't that much to do - well without too much effort, being on a beach and being hungover is not a good idea! lol. I did manage to get a bit of a tan, and got a bit burnt! The pier was good, I would have gone on the rides if I felt ok.

I also love Blackpool, especially the Pleasure Beach and piers. I'm thinking of going to Southend on Sea for the day, does anyone know if it's any good? It's cheap to get there from London and they have a theme park.

    Now you are lying.

At the risk of sounding like the horse person, it is dirty and smelly and full of people who wear kiss me quick hats.

I have never been to Southend
