I was an avid forces 'penpal-er' some years ago, mainly because of the thrill of getting home from work and finding a pile of blueys on the doormat each day. Letter-writing is a dying art, and I always felt rather honoured to think that someone had taken the time & trouble to pen a few lines to me. There were some definite nutters around and about ~ the chap who wrote poems to 'our unborn child'....before we'd even met, the guy who wanted to send me £500 to replace my washing machine when it broke and the many who simply wanted a recipient for their sexual fantasies! Most of the squaddies who are on tour are bored, lonely and need a bit of a thrill to add to their day ~ other than trying to avoid being blown up, shot or similar. Many WILL proclaim undying love, many will want to meet, but take it all with a pinch of salt and enjoy the experience for what it is. Having said that, I met one lad (10 years my junior, oh the joy of a toyboy!) who was doing a tour in Bosnia. We met, it clicked, and we got married six months later! That was 13 years ago & we're still together, two children down the line!
I found him and my other penpals via writing a letter addressed simply to 'a forces penpal' followed by a BFPO address. These are freely accessible online(I can't give you the link as I'm a newbie; if you type in "Lookup BFPO numbers" you should find it.), so I'm not breaking any military rules by giving it out. Having said that, given the current alert status, I'm wondering whether letters addressed to ' a penpal' would be viewed with a modicum of suspicion by recipients. Anyway, it's worth a go. Have fun, but be cautious.

Gandalf ~ " So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
