Gents, at 68, as an ex-National Serviceman/Regular soldier, and a veteran of Korea and Malaya from 1956-59, never having fired a shot in anger at anyone, I think our lads out there are doing a fantastic job, under really hard circumstances. Bloody good luck to all of them, let's hope they all come home safely. Cheers, Woodville.

I've had a couple of letters from a lovely sounding 23 year old in Basra who was on the original list. As I'm a bit older than him, I'd love to find him someone nearer his own age to write to.
If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll give you his details. He says he'd be delighted to hear from anyone and he's got a lot of love to give!

They also have a board and when you send pictures of yourself they stick them up to find who has the ugliest bird and throw darts at them.

I know I shouldn't laugh but that did tickle me! Darts at the photos or the person with the ugliest bird?

If you've seen the film Jarhead the board there was used for photos of girlfriends and wives who had been unfaithful while they were stuck overseas.

My dad is in the forces and will be going out to Afghanistan early next year. Some of the his lads are very young and yes they will do childish things like this but you can't really begrudge them a laugh when they are a long way from reality and risking their lives.

Edit to add: In fact, I'd go so far as to say if it was a choice between a squaddie enjoying my letters and having a giggle over my photo with his mates OR sitting there and getting no post at all and feeling lonely as hell, I'd much prefer the former.

But don't go stealing other people's husbands ladies. That's so not cool!
