Seems to have got a load of free publicity for the shop though. Maybe the owner has a relative who is in PR.

I was just thinking the same thing ILW - there was a recent article in the Daily Mail, of a lady who had two upholstery shops, and she'd advertised for an assistant for £9/hour but had no takers. I thought to myself then that it'd be a good advert for the firm concerned. Plus also it's a great way to get more people to apply for the job, thus guaranteeing you'll get more people to choose from.

I think we should send Graham up there to get to the bottom of all this. When he's finished with them they'll have no idea how many people applied, what the job was or if they even own a shop.

please stop being beastly to graham - that's my job :)
  • I agree, something doesn't quite ring true with this story. A truer picture of the situation are the 4,130 that recently applied for 190 primark jobs in Blackburn.

So about 22 per post in an area of the country if you don't mind me saying not doing that great on unemployment (I think 3rd highest rate).

Perhaps the shop in question is in "Round My Way", that could explain it. :)

£7/hour is a lot, especially compared to most local jobs.... I'd have applied if I'd lived near there.

Oddly enough, in the care sector where my partner works it is still very difficult to find suitable recruits. Many are put off by the unsocial hours and the status of the job.
    Bit sad really.

London has the fastest growing unemployment rate in the country so I read the other day.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Taking a job over 16 hours a week opens the doors to family tax credits, working tax credits, child care allowance, child tax credits.......Probably worth more in benefits than the pay itself.
I did a quick tot up the other day for my area.

If I were single, over 25, renting a 1-bed flat, working 30 hours a week and earning £10k, I'd get WTC and some LHA top up ... making my takehome equivalent to earning £15k full-time. That's crazy!

If I were in that position, having worked that out, I'd be looking to reduce my hours to 30 @ £10k down from £15k for 45 hours... and still get the same money.

    It's utterly crazy.... pure madness.

Well not really, as its one example.

There's a job opening at my firm that has been open since March yet still not filled. Does that also mean there are plenty of jobs around?

What's the job title and what does it entail?
