He may want to cluster feed. When my daughter (now 4 months) was that age she was similar and the health visitor basically told me you can either fight it or go with it.
We decided to go with it and fed her as much as she wanted in the evenings. Sometimes this felt like all I was doing was swapping her from side to side but once she was eating as much as she wanted she was happier. We were happier as she was no longer crying all evening. It also meant that she started sleeping at night more and more as she'd stocked up from her cluster feeds.
Now at 4 months she still does it a bit but much less. Only downside is I'm now addicted to *loads* of trashy telly!December £10 a day saving:-

She will stop when I rub her back or pick her up, but not always. The only thing I don't do/haven't tried is to let her cry, maybe I should but I find that hard, I go to her as soon as she starts up again....every 2 blasted minutes!
I have tried letting her stay up in her bouncy chair and she does stop crying but she yawns and her eyes look so sleepy I'm sure it is sleep she needs.
She is on a sort of 3 hourly routine through the day so she has about 4 hours sleep in total through the day 7am-7pm. So I think she probably needs from 7pm-7am (waking for feeds) at her age....she does seem to disagree though!
theres your answer, dont leave your child crying if all it takes is to let her nod off in her bouncy chair.
You say in your OP that your 'up and down' - why are you 'up and down' she is two months old - are you putting her in a cot away from her mum ? dont do that, stay with her, give her the security she needs and let her nod off when she is ready - not when YOU are ready.I understand ALOT more than I care to let on

please dont do this, there is a much higher risk of cotdeath, keep your child with you until they are asleep then lay them on their back - from the things that are being said here you people shouldnt EVER have had children, its not about you anymore - its about them, if you have them LOOK AFTER THEM PROPERLY!
do what your baby needs you to do not what you've read or what sounds favourable to youI understand ALOT more than I care to let on
