Who did you speak to? A cashier?0

In law you don't legally need a receipt you just need to prove it was purchased there. So if you can show that that's the only place they are sold locally and maybe show you have been there recently. Try to speak to a manager not just the ones on the till0

Spoke to the people on returns they said because it was nor a B&Q product they would not do anything about it0

How about a bank or cc statement showing you purchased there? Would they accept that as proof of purchase?0

Go back and ask to speak to the store manager. Tell him you bought the item and that is is obviously not up to standard and ask him how he intends to rectify the situation and put the ball in his court.
If he doesn't want to do anything ask him to give you the number of the company's customer services department and see if that makes a difference.

Proof of purchase?
Shops will often tell you they will only give a refund on production of proof of purchase. Don’t be misled into thinking this must be a till receipt. It can be a bank or credit card statement, although you may run into difficulties if it is for a different amount than that of the item you are trying to return.
If the item is damaged, the shop cannot say they will only refund on the basis of a till receipt. However you must have proof of purchase of some kind – particularly if it was bought recently and you want to show that the damage wasn’t caused by continued use or wear and tear over time.
Unfortunately doesnt sound like a lot you can do if you've paid cash:(You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
