If the form's asking for it and you don't know, just stick "A" in....what's the worst that can happen ;)

They ask you to provide copy certificates, the certificates show an F, and you get sacked and possibly prosecuted for fraud.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Thats why I hate application forms... they ask the most STUPID things ever. HOW THE HELL would I know the telephone number of my high school or 1st employer?! totally irrelevant time wasting information.

Hmmm, interesting idea.... nah, I could never carry it off! I didn't get an A til I was a mature student- THEN I hit my academic mojo ;)

The 87 exams were all B and Cs, and the '88 '89 were a similar level but !!!!!!ed if I can remember exactly... and now I'm wondering if they were standard grades! Nah... were they?

    Walks off grumbling.

    ps thanks all!

    Hi,

If I was you, I would put down what you can remember along with the grades ... my attitude is that if a company wants to see my "O" levels from back in 1984, then it is not a company I want to work for .... I don't mind putting it on a application form, but actually asking to see the certificates from 1984, when I have a degree & masters is really nuts as far as I am concerned.

Online forms are often generic so the company will use the same one whatever the post being filled. They might also ask for grades because that could be important for deciding between two 16 year olds, but I can't imagine they would care less if you are older and have a degree. I would just put them down as best as possible, it doesn't matter if it was a B or a C as long as you don't put it was an A if it was an E.

Agree completely - just put down what you can remember with C for all ...

    Hi,

To be honest, if I have a form like that, I put down Maths & English, grade C, 1984 - if they are really that interested, then they can ask at interview & if they reject my application because I don't have enough O levels, well that is their lose!

Well nothing is ever straighforward... I called the SQA (thanks Owain!) and they said there was a mixture of the A/B/C and 1/2/3 marking from the mid 80s to the late 80s so no help there! Unless of course I spend 38 quid getting replacement certificates...
I'll have to put in letters and cross my fingers that they won't know any difference!

Unfortunately it's at an educational institution so there's a chance they'll know what it should be anyway...!

You need to understand some things.
The position applied for will attract a large number of applicants, many of whom will have this information to hand.
The application form & person spec is probably asking you to demonstrate that you meet the expected academic qualifications. If you get selected for an interview you will need to prove it.
The person/people doing the sorting can't second guess what you mean, they need clarity.

Do yourself a favour and spend the money & time and get replacement certificates

As the OP has a degree, I would suggest that qualifications that he took at school are not really relevent - as long as he puts something down, then should be fine - the likelyhood of them asking him to prove it are very low ...
