hi
just bought sky broadband on landline. ADSL.
Just BB, no tv deal.
have a PC desktop(old) and mac laptop(newish).
and might be getting another mac desktop (old)
Want all on internet.
Would a ethernet cable connection be faster and more efficient than wireless? generally speaking.
I want the PC permanently connected with wire.
the router is in middle of room, and pc is at corner.
so i need an extension wire.
would there be a difference in speed if i get a long ethernet cable? compared to if i get a extenesion for the wire that goes into phone socket? (micro filter section)
Think thers only 2 ethernet socket on router, yellow ones, or are other ones usable too? manual says they are for technology they are still working on..
cheers

An ethernet connection would be more reliable than wireless. Sorry, not sure about the other questions.0 -
The third and fourth Ethernet ports are for new services, e.g the upcoming Sky Anytime plus video on demand service. However you can use these as additional Ethernet ports.
Always extend your Ethernet lead rather than the phone lead, or use homeplugs. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

A cable will only be faster if you transfer data between your computers. The wireless speed will be fast enough for your Internet connection. But as others said, cable is more reliable and I would use it where possible.0 -

so then the OLD white sky router is better, as there are i think 4 ethernet port sockets, on the new black on, as you say, only 2.
2 is not enough.
oh sorry, you can use these as ethernet ports...ok.
manual says use main phone socket...i have two in living room.
i dont know which is main...engineer tested one, one he said he couldnt check as it wasnt allowing him to plug his equipment in, but the microfilter plugs into it fine....(it was just awkward for him to test as table was in the way)
he did try, but said the socket was not a phone socket, he wasnt sure.
but the micro filter is fitting into it, i did it today....
could this be a diff connection, not a phone line socket? man its confusing.
i dont know which socket to put router on for the 10 day testing period.
can i swap and test both on the first day??? manual says leave on for 10 days.....
homeplugs??
thankyou0 -
You main telephone socket has a split faceplate and looks like this:-
Extensions are wired to the back of the faceplate, if you have spped issues you can check if extensions are causing problems by plugging into the test socket beneath the cover.
Homeplugs are a networking solution using your mains wiring.

DLM may not have started yet so you should plug in where you get the best speed ( or check the sync by clicking on http://192.168.0.1/sky_router_status.html user admin, password sky) then leave it switched on and connected as advised.
You can check if DLM is running via your MySky pages. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
thankyou
i dont think i can look at my sky setting yet, i dont think i have username and password.
i have two sockets in my living room i think.
see pics.
but i also have a BT socket like the pic in previous post in my bedroom. i dont wanna have to use this as my computers are in living room.
pic 1, top right, the microfilter fits into this socket.
pic 2: the socket the engineer tested.
which one shall i use????????
i dont know how to post pics up here.0 -
I have told you what the router username and passwords are.
User:- admin
Password:- sky
Sky will send you an email user anme and password, but that is different.
Ideally you should connect to your master socket, not an extension. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
thankyou
how do i post pics here?
where do i buy a LONG ethernet cable from? are there diff specs with the cable?
is that what its called? ethernet cable? the wire that connectes PC to internet, from router into pc.0 -
