I want a new front and back door but am confused by the different types.

Got hardwood doors at the moment but they do need replacing and as I have upvc windows I thought of getting upvc doors.

But I keep hearing about composite doors, are they better than upvc doors??

Do composite doors need painting (I am trying to avoid this) or just wiping down to keep nice?

    thanks for your advice

  • It sounds like you are looking for a york one. If you are getting it in white it is important that they match the frame with the actual door panel as there can be a differance on the shades of white and it can look awful.

Most manufacturers build the frame and buy in the door panel. Make sure it has a good locking system and enquire about rhino bolts which are fitted to the hinge side of the door for extra security.

Also ask about the hieght of the door thresh as some are so high you have to step over so the lower the better for prames etc.

Also make sure the panels are re-inforced.

Have you looked at composite doors which are designed to look loke wood doors and come in a range of colours and styles.

For a york one look to pay £ 450-550 fitted and for a composite 750-850.

Its better to pay more as a door fitted correctly should last a long time so its got to be right.

Remember its one of the few things keeping the bad people from all your goodies so dont skimp.
  • And one more thing.

If you are getting two doors then ask for them keyed a like.

This means both doors will operate with the same key.

In my opinion much better unless you lose the key that is.

Also composite doors are not wood so no painting. And if your house is south facing and tends to get the sun a lot be careful about darker colours as they tend to absorb the heat and can have a tendency to warp when hot. Making it difficult to close the doors untill it gets cooler.

    Only rarely but possible.

Also go for - anti bump locks, secure by design handles and sash jammers.

Entry into a property through a basic uPVC door lock and handle can take 5 seconds.
