HTC Desire SD card problem

Hi,Since I got my phone I have been using my own sd card as it's 8gb and the one with the phone is only 4gb.

When I take out the memory card and reinsert it,a notification comes up to tell me the sd card is faulty and I have to reformat it,losing all my data.

Is my phone faulty? The sd card works fine, the phone doesn't seem to like it being removed. I had it in my previous phone with no problems and have tried it back in it and it's ok.

Thing is Htc sd card came loaded with softwear that I would like to access such as the sync, but I don't want to reinstall everything if I switch them over from time to time.

Anyone else had the same problem ?

I've seen lots of examples of the SD card that came with the phone being faulty. Can't you move the files off the card that came with the phone onto the other card so you don't have to keep swapping them over?
  • Not really sure since the sync software is on the 4gb card and if I take out the card I will lose everything.
Really want to be able to swap without losing data,I am too scared to remove it as I will need to set everything up again.

Are you just taking the card out or are you properly stopping the card before removing.? You have to select unmount sd card in settings.

When I first got my phone and put a 8 gig card in it told me it was faulty so I copied the contens off the original 4 gig to it and it works fine. I believe there is software on the 4 gig card that is needed.

you have to unmount the card before removing the card, otherwise you can corrupt the data.

not all devices format cards the same way. a card formatted in a laptop or another device might not be usable properly in another device. usually formatting a card in the same device makes it usable.

some cheap cards got off the internet might actuaklly be fake cards altered to make 2gb look like 32gb etc as they fiddle with the card and sell for profit. this might cause problems with devices. best to buy cards from reputed sellers to avoid such problems.

htc synch latest version is available to download from htc website. it goes on your laptop / computer and not your phone! it synchs your device (phone) and not the sd card, so swapping cards shouldnt cause issues, you should have the backup files on your computer after synching the card and then swap another card and synch those files too.

please note htc synch does not copy everything..... read the manual!

so another way to do it is to connect to computer as external drive then create folder on computer (anywhere of your choice) then use explorer to navigate to your phone then sd card then copy everything from phone sd card onto the new folder on your computer, then unmount the phone properly from the computer and then unmount the sd card using the settings option on the phone, then switch off the phone. then insert new card, sometimes the phone may ask you to format the card if the card is not formatted or formatted in a way the phone does not recognise (in another device), then again connect to computer as external ememroy device, then copy all files/folders from the back up copy you made as described above in this paragraph and then paste it on your new sd card. .... job done.

or use some paid apps available for doing this... use google to find them! but why would you want to pay if you can do the same for free as described in the above paragraph.

ps: maxtweenie the card probs you see online are freq because people buy cheap cards that might be dodgy, or the cards are formatted in different devices and not all devices do the formatting the same way and devices dont recognise formatting in another way. also if cards are not unmounted properly and just pulled out then they might get corrupted. last but not the least, flash memory has got a limited user life and that might be the reason why the card does not work! so always keep a back up of any important info.

  • Thank you for the advice,I purchased it from play so would think it's not a fake.
I didn't realise you had to "unmount the card".

For some reason I can't get the sync to download onto my PC is comes up:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that it unavailable. Click ok to try again,or enter an alternative package "vcredist.msi" in the box below.

I have tried several times to downlaod it.

You should always umount the card from the phone menu before removing. You can copy all the directories from the original card onto a larger new one if you need to. I've done so twice and it always works fine.

if you have the previous version of htc synch then you have to uninstall it first and then only try to instal the new version on your computer. http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=312&act=sd&cat=all

Out of interest, why are you taking the card out??

I've never tried attmpting to get the card out with the battery inserted (I don't like the position of the card) so my phone is off whenever I remove the card.

When I have had these sort of issues (on my old Hero) a quick Scan and Repair worked okay without the loss of any data.

You can try apps like Mybackup Pro which will enable you to backup your data online.

Alternatively, if you into tweaking around, Root the phone and perform a Nandroid backup and keep it safe on your PC somewhere and just use mybackup for textx and call history backups

Most of the SD card problems I've seen on here and HUKD were a faulty batch of 4gb cards that came with the original Desires from T-mobile. Touch wood, I haven't had any problems with mine.
