I'm pretty sure john lewis do washable nappies too (not own brand though, kooshies)

That £60 cot sounds very good to me. Although please remember that bumpers and quilts are not recommended for babies, they can overheat with the quilt and all sorts of nasty things can happen with a bumper (not least them using them as a foot hold to get out!!).

    Good luck with everything

I second the advice about NCT nearly new sales - I've saved a fortune going to the ones near me. You can find your nearest branch via the website https://www.nctpregnancyandbabycare.com. Also, my local paper always has all sorts of baby stuff in the classifieds. My dd also didn't last long in the cot, but we found a toddler bed for £20 in the paper :) On that note, my friends all got cot beds & are still using them since they're that bit bigger, but have had to buy new cots for child#2...
Also, join all the baby clubs you can - pampers, huggies, sainsbury's, tescos, toys'r'us - they all give great vouchers.

I bought a cot as I wanted more than 1 child and we had a new single bed anyway. I did buy an expensive mattress thoug - a sprung one because it looked more comfy. I know tiny babes won't be able to tell the difference, but after a while, even with just one baby, I found my friend's foam mattresses were all lumpy and wearing out. I don't think you do have to buy a new mattress for each child now. Anyway, mine had removeable cotton covers as well as a waterproof membrane, so I washed it all every so often. I also always used a waterproof sheet as well as one normal sheet. So my cot and mattress has done 2 boys just over 2 years each and both are still like new. (I'll have to start selling it all)

I did buy a baby bjorn carrier, which although didn't get used hugely for carting baby around town etc, I found invaluable when colic struck. If you have a heavy baby that just wants carrying around in an upright position, it's much easier for you.

Check your local paper etc/borrow off anyone who will let you. There must be loads of people around who aren't intending to have any more kids but still have lofts full of stuff.

which county do you live in?

it is good to have a lookat nappies before buying to get an idea of what's involved!

hi, i'm in staffordshire (in the midlands). i just found there's an NCT sale in a few weeks, around 15 minutes drive from here :-)

not planning any more babies after this one so a cot bed might be a good idea. i'll think about it for a while longer :-)

i keep changing my mind about a travel cot/playpen in the living room, am now thinking about a rocker with adjustable backrest. i'm seen one for £38 that converts into a rocking chair for a toddler, it's fisher price, has anyone used one? could a small baby sleep in it in the daytime? maybe i need to go to toysrus again, although i can't afford to shop there they have a selection for viewing :-)

thanks for all your help :-)

by the way there's a thread on grabbit about a lindam steam steriliser in asda for under £8 if anyone's interested.

If the chair is just for sleeping in during the day downstairs why not just use the pram? They only need to sleep downstairs for a few weeks. After that it upto bed :) I never bought a travel cot/playpen after one of my sisters did and her children refused to go into it. Can't say I missed it. :)

  • For secondhand items you could look at the nearly new board on your local https://www.netmums.com site. You can also post wanted notices on there.

There are so many reusable nappies to choose from now, more recently I've bought from https://www.kittykins.co.uk as postage is free and they have a good range. https://www.thenappylady.co.uk is also good for advice.

hi poppy, i don't really know where we're going to put the pram to be honest lol! i thought we would keep it folded up in the hallway if we can squeeze past it, or it would have to be kept in baby's room although the wheels would probably get covered in dog muck and i wouldn't notice until i'd lugged it upstairs over the carpets lol! i suppose the pram wouldn't take up more room than a chair really though. hubby says if they only need to sleep downstairs for a few weeks then could i put it on the sofa?

I never had a bouncer chair type thingy (I used my pram - summer babies - went in garden), but quite a few of my friends have, and swear by them - particularly the newer ones that have adjustable positions. They can be used up to about 6/7 months, and are really useful for weaning/daytime naps.

Again, hopefully this might be something you can pick up at the NCT sale. My only advice re. the sale is get there early, they queue down the street an hour before it starts here.

i've been looking at chairs today and surprisingly few have adjustable backs. i'm really taken with the fisher price one although the thought of spending £38 on a chair doesn't appeal, lol! it has a toy bar, vibration (?) and can be a rocker for a toddler so it looks pretty good. i also really like the look of the fisher price play centre thing where they can use it as a baby gym then can sit up and play with the balls etc. as they get older ... why oh why is it always the expensive fisher price stuff that catches my eye lol!!

i wonder if i'm cheeky enough to claim enough emma's diary packs to make a saving in vouchers on my grocery shopping equivalent to the amount i'd be spending on fisher price stuff? i'd be embarassed though, the staff in boots know me. emma's diary mum to be pack contains a card to pass on to a pregnant friend so theoretically you could get unlimited packs if you just filled in the card yourself each time. each pack has around £2 in coupons ... hmmm ...

also has everyone seen the free huggies newborn in prima baby mag? the mag is £2.20 but comes with a travel changing mat (huggies), a coupon for a 28 pack of newborn nappies (or 144 wipes pack), 75p off corsodyl (haven't tried it in asda yet) and £1 off a MAM toothbrush at boots. i used them today, the toothbrush was £1.99.
