Nationwide Card Reader

Not sure if this subject has been brought up recently (could not find it in search) but Nationwide have foisted a card reader on me to carry about wherever I am and to use for certain online transactions.
Fair do's, so I enquire further about the card reader when I cannot complete a straight forward pre-set payment to a utility company which I have paid without problem for the last 2 years.
Lady at Nationwide online messaging basically says that despite your logging in with 10 digit usernumber, personal reminder word, and 3 mouse chosen digits from your 6 digits log on number, the site is not secure enough to permit straight forward transactions to take place.
Pretty poor show if you ask me as it begs the question : "What about all the other https sites? Are you saying they are not to be considered secure without a card reader? should I refrain from using any https such as amazon, supermarkets, et cetera where they don't tell me to use a card reader?"
From the responses thus far:
Nationwide are refusing to say their site is insecure without the card reader but will not allow any transactions without it.
Another Nationwide quote:
At the end of the day, it looks like the websites are insufficiently secure (or else why would they introduce the card reader?) and so I guess not only will we have a card reader but possibly in future a fingerprint reader to go with the card reader and also a finger print/retina scanner at all ATM/Supermarket checkouts?

Chip and PIN technology allows us to provide you with an extra level of protection when banking online in the form of Card Reader Security. Certain transactions will require additional security, this is when you’ll be asked to use your card and Card Reader to authorise the transaction. This extra level of security will also allow us to offer you improved services in the future. It is Nationwide’s policy to ensure that all customers who are Visa Debit card holders and active users of the Internet Bank are covered by Card Reader Security.
In conjunction with up to date anti virus and firewall software this new technology will help to:
- Prevent fraudsters from signing on as a customer and removing funds
- Protect customers who may unknowingly have a virus or Trojan on their computer
- Provide assurance that the transaction has been initiated by the customer and the details have not been changed en route.
Nationwide are refusing to say their site is insecure without the card reader but will not allow any transactions without it.
Another Nationwide quote:
We're so confident of our site's security that we take full responsibility for it: if you ever innocently suffer any fraud as a result of our Internet Banking service, we'll refund any money taken from your account. That's a promise
Card Reader Security is a major initiative to further reduce the risk of Internet Banking fraud and other banking institutions are following our lead. You will have extra peace of mind in being able to continue to bank online safely, anytime, anywhere.

I hate Nationwide0

That's not been my experience. Each time I've paid money to my husband's account, I've had to use the card reader. I find it a real pain.0

I have never had to use my card reader, I use my account almost daily.0

I've banked online with nationwide for over a year and never had a card reader?
I only have a card reader for natwest.0 -
I've only had to use my cardreader at n'wide to set up a new payee but to be honest most of my transactions are just transferring between accounts. I find barclays more frustrating as I have to use the card reader just to log onto my accounts and the number of transactions you can see is very limited at barclays.0

I have to use my card reader everytime I want to send money to my HSBC current account, which is in my own name! It has become so repetitive, I can even have the code generated more quickly than it takes for their website to load the card reader screen: Press Sign, enter HSBC A/C number, press OK, enter amount, press OK.
Honestly, I'm getting fed up with the card reader for transactions to my own accounts. It is very inconvenient as I keep my wallet on a table in the lounge, my laptop upstairs and the card reader in my bag (which regularly finds it's way round the house). Even worse when I'm on the train as I have to rummage about in my bag, pull out my wallet and then look like a right div using the stupid card reader in view of everyone else, whilst having endless questions from the person sat next to me about "why I put a debit card into a calculator".
I previously used my Nationwide account as a second current account, which was regularly used. But due to this (and a few other reasons), the account is now used solely for transactions abroad. If they didn't offer this, the account would be closed tomorrow.0 -
Nationwide has been going downhill since it had that embarrassing stolen laptop incident three years ago.0

I have to use my card reader every time I send money to another account be it a utility bil, my own at a different bank or someone else's account. I fully expect to have to use it to pay someone else but not for utility bills where Nationwide have the account number stored.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0
