I lost my Nationwide card reader at one point - they replace them free so I let them know and they sent me another one. The best thing was that they suspended the need to use it on my account until I acknowledged receipt of the new one (bliss). I held off acknowledging receipt as long as I could (until they started hinting that I might have to go to my branch to pick another card reader up). For a few weeks, my life was much easier.

If you need to send money to a new payee you might find you need one then. I suggesting requesting one online so you have one in case you do ever need it. You can use readers from different banks. I've used my Nationwide one when doing online at barclays.

I've never had one either, and not asked for one when paying new payees.

As much as people hate using these things, there will come a time in the not too distant future where every account will have one and you will have to use it every time you make a card payment online (eg Amazon etc).

Despite the general inconvenience, they ARE secure and they DO prevent fraud.

I have similar devices for my online poker accounts. Little key fobs that have a button that you press and you have to enter the code when you log on. It's based on the premise that you need two things to prove your identity...

    Something you know (your passwords)
Something you have (a passkey or card reader and card).

What would be better is if you could have something like we have at work: a card slot in the computer keyboard.

I read about Visa codesure in the paper a couple of weeks ago. It's been trialed and if that comes in then card readers will be obsolete but I'm sure the cost of producing cards will be much, much higher. After reading the article I've googled but not read that any banks are introducing it iminently but the article indicated banks will be sending out visa codesure cards in the next couple of months, maybe it was a bit optimistic.

very much what your saying Dizzle, you need the card and your pin number but you won't even need a slot in the keyboard. If I remember rightly it was to make visa purchases more secure, not sure if it would be for online abanking too, I might be getting muddled.

Just looked this up and it looks much better....

Might be a year or two before we see it in the high street, though it wouldn't surprise me if Barclays are the first as they usually tend to be with new things (first UK credit card, first UK debit card etc).

Just depends how durable they are- cards at the moment rarely reach their natural expiry date these days due to wear and tear.

    Oh, and here...

for full announcement- inlcuding it's use for online banking.

you can, I wrote a program that implements the same CAP algorithm as the cards use as I got fed up with the crappy displays on the cardreaders and I just so happen to have a keyboard with a smartcard slot (they're under a tenner these days anyway)

it runs on Windows XP and higher, if you're interested let me know, the app doesn't make any internet connections, it's completely clean. you can feel free to sandbox it, block it from internet access, whatever you want to do to feel secure and it'll work fine

Those who don't have to use a card reader are extremely lucky. I have to use my card reader on every transaction, every time, even accounts which are in my payments and transfers list. It's an added irritation.
