Cheers, many wonderful films there, some gone under the radar.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. Life of Brian
Time Bandits
The Wicker Man
Lawrence of Arabia
The African Queen
Bridge on the River Kwai
Dr. Strangelove
Zulu
The Ipcress File
etc0 -
I agree, most Brit flicks such as my beautiful laudereete are utterly boring and depressing. No escapism, no atmosphere. No polish and no artistic flair.
Crits love em of course, just as a lot of music producers I know (I am one myself - albeit with only a couple of recent signings) go in for 'artistic' works that jo public would find boring.
Mike Lean is all that is wrong with this country - white over eagre middle class out of touch rose tinted guilt married with a rich lifestyle - not a lot of redistribution of YOUR wealth then sir.0 -

They also push a liberal/left viewpoint, almost without exception - as does the state subsidised theatre.
Why entertainment industry luvvies feel they are entitled to have their fabulous upper-middle class lifestyles funded by everyone else is one of the paradoxes of the socialist mind.0 -
Don't get me wrong, there are some great British films (mostly from 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s). I just can't stand the whole cliched upper class or down-trodden working class characters that seem to permeate British films these days. I always find it ironic how everyone takes the !!!! out of how American films are so cliched with go-ho action characters or women looking perfectly dolled up a la Hollywood, yet British films are often as stereotyped as they come.
You have films like Four Weddings, Bridget Jones, Love Actually, Harry Potter etc where all the characters are basically bumbling loveable toffs. Then you have grim, grey, depressing melodramas (mostly from bores like Mike Leigh and Ken Loach) where every character is ugly, depressed and working class.
Why can't British films just feature normal, everyday people as opposed to class stereotypes?
Also - British film is so bloody incestuous. There are other actors/actresses out there other than the usual handful of annoying luvvies.0 -
Maybe they should put the £100 million odd into a 8 man investment company with the remit of making as much profit as they can for the british public. No arty farty stuff, just good old fashion British escapism, violence, and pr0n.
Run well, we could reduce the artistic merit of british cinema, and make a pot of cash for the state. A win-win situation, I'm sure you agree.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
