Hubby bought new car, picking it up on thursday. Now my question is, getting insurance changed over from 4pm. We already have the tax book and will have cover note tomorrow saying insurance changed from 29th at 4pm.

Can I go thursday morning and tax it so when car is picked up can put tax disc on it to drive it home? I rang tax office and they said no, cannot tax it until after 4pm thursday when insurance starts, cannot get insurance changed over before 4pm as have to drive old car to dealer as trading it in so need insuranc on old car. As I am taxing it same date as insurance starts thought it would be ok.

Will we be ok picking car up 4pm thursday and going and taxing it on friday ? I am just so confused :rotfl:

this is what it says onDVA site

Insurance

When you apply for a vehicle licence, you must produce the certificate or cover note (not the policy, receipt, schedule nor a photocopy or fax) which must be valid on the date the licence comes into force.

So nsurance will start on 29th, just later than the time I am going to tax it if that makes sense lol

If the policy is not in force they should not let you tax it. Will depend on the person behind
the counter if they spot that and can be bothered with the hassle.

When I have changed cars in the past the insurance company has allowed both cars to be insured simultaneously, as you can only drive one car at a time, in other words your old car is insured until you pick the new one up then it tranfers to the new one.
Usually the new one starts from 12 am on the chosen day and the old one expires when you collect your new car. Can't the garage tax the car for you at your expense?

Any good dealer should advise you on the best way forward in your situation. It may be the first new car for you but (hopefully!) not for them

Some dealers e.g. Audi give you free 7 day trial insurance which would get you on the road.

    Happy new car

Everytime i have bought from a main dealer (new and used) they have given me 7 days 'drive away cover' which they then used to tax the car before i collected it. I've never arranged my own tax on a car from a main dealer.

Likewise, when I bought my new car in March it was taxed by the dealer and I was given a 7 day 'drive away cover' insurance. Surely, the dealer will be able to help you with this.

If he bought a NEW car the road tax is included in the price, it should come taxed.

You're thinking of taxing the car from 29th of the month?

Not very MSE, is it? ;)
