    thank you Keith - I found that route by taking a route for a ticket I had actually bought in advance for the outward leg and typing in the separate legs into the East Coast site - was pleasantly surprised!

    That's not the point - to get that fare you had to book in advance, possibly well in advance. OP is after routes that don't require advance booking to achieve a saving.
