Unless you have an Oystercard with PAYG money it's cheaper to pay the one off fare rather than get a Travelcard for this journey
Well like I said I was thinking of breaking up the journey with a bit of shopping and whatnot in London.0 -

Saving of £50
Yes but
Glasgow to York is £78 return, not £25.
Your saving is achieved by advance booking, not just split ticketting, and is not repeatable for every (off peak) train, day after day
OP wants examples that do not require advance booking - or he's on mission impossible if he isn't.
And the cheapest listed fare Glasgow to Derby is £13.50 single - I suspect they are very rarely on offer though. £73 saving if they are.0 -

It's actually cheaper to buy an advance fare from Newport to Zone 1 than buy a separate underground single (£3 extra rather than £4). Or the 205 bus is £2.0 -
Don't forget that longer journey tickets can also be cheaper.
There can be substatioal savings for stations north of York on East Coast Line. I also found Nottingham to Thames Link Stations cheaper than to St Pancras.
Only problem some barriers won't let you out, and you might have got to give staff a good reason for getting out at an earlier station. Feeling ill always has worked for me0 -

On Advance Single tickets that's technically known as 'travelling short or a break of journey' and is not allowed in accordance with the 'national rail conditions of carriage', its allowed on most Anytime and Off peak tickets subject to any restriction with that ticket.
If you were unlucky and a revenue protection inspector on the barrier thought that you were trying use this to your advantage for fare avoidance, he could issue you with new full walk on fare, or if you kick up a fuss a copper to nick you.Whoa! Newport [Gwent] to Plymouth direct is normally around £50 more than buying tickets from Newport to Bristol and then Bristol to Plymouth even though it is the same train.0

Well I didn't actually book returns. I bought 2 sets of singles which were £12.50 eachMarried 30/08/14 :heartpuls0 -

I've managed to knock Nottingham-Newcastle down from £68 to £47 - not by booking in advance, these are all tickets that will have to be bought on the day.
Nottingham - Sheffield 10.70, Sheffield-Doncaster £3.90, Doncaster-Newcastle £32.50.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200 -
