Leaving Orange and then rejoining - will they let me keep number

Phoned orange to cancel and request a pac. Not happy.

PAC lasts 30 days but if I let it expire then I've got to give another 30 days notice. Apparently take 5-7 days for pac transfer so latest I can leave it is 23 days from now.

So, basically, I end up paying for the last 30 days of my contract even though the number could have moved away from any time after day 23.

So is it definite that you cant cancel one contract with a supplier and get pac code, and then get another contract somehwere else with same supplier and use pac code?
