Did a bit of "blackberrying" yesterday.
Might as well have had three heads and danced around naked given some of the stares i got whilst doing it.
*******
We spent a lot of time late July/early August picking bilberries at Brimham Rocks (beauty spot/tourist attraction in North Yorks) and could not believe the number of people who asked what we were picking and what we did with them! One lady from "down south" even videod us! I shall be mortified if I appear on UTube!!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -

Hi l_m_w I am starting to pick this coming week. They are looking fantastic in the area where we keep our caravan in North Yorks. I know you are supposed to wait till after the first frost but, to be honest, I picked last year at this time, froze them to use as and when I needed them, and they were perfect. I used them throughout the winter and well into spring for cordials, jellies, chutneys and, of course, sloe gin!
I would have picked some last week but we were busy picking the blackberries and elderberries!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -
ok, so i sat on the sofa this afternoon with a corn on the cob skewer stabbing all my sloes. i purchased my sainsburys basics gin and my sugar - combined the lot into two old spirit bottles and magic!! sloe gin is transforming right before my eyes lol
so this afternoon ive been and picked two huge ice cream tubs full of blackberries for a recipe i spotted in nigellas new book 'kitchen' - blackberry vodka
so am off tomorrow to go and buy a preserving jar and a cheap bottle of vodka to start recipe number 2!! Re-embracing the Money Saving Way of Life after a little lapse!0 -
Does anyone know when the sloes are likely to be ready this year (North Yorkshire)? Got my cheapo gin all ready

Have a look. If they are a deep purple, with the bloom on them, and squishy, then they are ready!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

First frost isn't about flavour. It's about the right time to pick them, a guide.
