Small bedroom with stair block in

At the moment we have my 3 year old daughter in the smallest bedroom. It has a block in it over the stairs meaning the only place to put a bed is under the window. We put a piece of wood on the block and it's been used as a nappy changing table.

She's got loads of toys now and hasn't really got room to play in her room, but 11 year old has a bigger room and is growing out of playing on the floor, so we are thinking of swapping rooms with them. The 11 year old is off to secondary school so he needs a bed, desk, wardrobe and drawers and we are trying to work out the best way of fitting things in.

He's seen this bed, and obviously we will have to measure first, but we thought we could cut the left hand legs down, so the shelf rests on the stair block. First thing we've looked at, so I know I might get a better deal if we shop around:

Another idea was to build half a bed frame out from the block to make a low cabin bed with a cupboard or shelves under the bed fame bit.

Hoping to find a solution that will last until he's 18+ and leaves home. Anyone got any other ideas on what they would do with the room?

Here's a rough sketch of the room. It's 8'7" x 6'8" and we're looking to make the best use of the space available.

Here I go again on my own....

Putting the bed over the block looks like a good idea but you would have to be sure it could take the weight of not only the wooden bed but the person sleeping in it... building a cabin bed with the foot end over the block might be better as there wouldn't be much weight resting on it... You could move the radiator so the bed goes under the window.... but its not ideal

We once built a bed over a stair block, (didn't know it was called that!) We didn't rest it on the block though, but built a frame just above it. We put shelves underneath for storage.
It was a good solution for a tiny room.

I have the same house as you by the sounds of it! I don't need it as a bedroom so I built a desk over the block in using some kitchen work surface.

My neighbour though had a 2 kids living with him until they moved out as adults, and he had the son in the small room. He built him a custom made bed over the block in to use the space as efficiently as possible.

You could make a wardrobe over the stairblock and have one of those cabin beds that has a pull out desk. Or you could build the bed over the stair block as suggested. I also know people who have knocked thru the wall that the stair block is on and built over the stairs- whether this is suitable for your house and how much it would cost I wouldn't know, but you could get a builder to have a look.

It won't necessarily help you get a bed in, however, you should look at switching the door so that it opens outwards. That will give whoever gets the room a bit more breathing space to put things.

Having a frame built so the end of the bed goes over the stairblock sounds the best use of space to me. I wouldn't have a wardrobe built over it though, if it's anything like the cupboard I have in my bathroom it'd be way too high for that.

Also bear in mind how far out the ladder projects if you adapted a hi-sleeper, I had to search high and low to find one with the ladder flat to the bed.

Looks very much like our third bedroom too - where our 3 year old sleeps :D Your plans are similar to ours - when our little one gets older we plan on building some sort of frame to support a bed with the idea of having her foot end over the stair-block thingy. Go for it, definitely the best thing to do in a room of that size!
