Sorry but I can't put that other link back as it's only visible to moderators on that site.

Anyway, you seem to have loaded SP1a sucessfully so we can go from there.

As I said earleir, SP2 will NOT install correctly on a computer that is not fully & correctly functional.

Your trouble suggests there is something wrong with your computer. The usual problem is a Trojan, a virus or some other sort of malware infection.

I suggest you set some time aside and go through all the steps in the first 4 posts to this thread......

At the end you will see an instruction to scan with HijackThis . Please do that and post the scan log report to this thread for further checking.

If it's clean we will let you know and you can try again to install SP2.

  • Sounds like you've got a hardware driver conflict with SP2. This was a fairly common issue when SP2 first came out until the hardware manufacturers updated their drivers. You've probably still got out of date drivers.

Roll back to SP1a, then go to https://www.drivershq.com and run a scan of your system. Download and update any out of date drivers then try updating to XP SP2 again.

  • UPDATE: I downloaded the updates one by one, till i came across one that didnt allow windows to start up, so in safe mode i removed it through control panel and add/remove program, then carried on downloading the remainder of the updates, there were 2 left to do, one of which was the one causing the problems, so i did the second to last one, and to my surprise and relief, that particular update was not listed and in its place was the SP2 update!!! Hurray
Thanks so much for your suggestions.

the posting was so quick so, here goes, there actually were two versions of service pack two one failed on some computers for some reason, but then another version was brought out of service pack two and this time it worked.
you can check the two versions of the service packs by their numbers and dates

Well don't bother to come here for help when (note the WHEN not "if") you are infected with all manner of malware.
