Having Trouble with XP

Hi, I was having trouble getting auto updates for windows, then i got it to work and it downloaded all the updates i needed.
The next time i started up my computer, windows would not load, and it went into safe mode, where i did a system restore to the point before it all downloaded. That was ok and sorted itself out. Now microsoft has said it will no longer provide support for SP1 which i have and need to download SP2, which i cannot do as i need to have the other updates, I don'tknow what update caused windows not to operate and even tried to install one by one but theres 50 of the blighters and i feel like im taking two steps forward and four back, what do you suggest please, thanks

Can't you download sp2 first, it should be the most important update to do first.

If you haven't already, switch your firewall on before you catch something.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • First, is your copy of Windows legitimate? - SP2 will cause problems on illegal copies of Windows. Then go through the steps here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx
    - it's Microsoft's own 'are you ready for SP2?' site - the main things being that your system is clear of spyware, viruses etc. before applying SP2.
  • Yes my firewall is switched on and yes its a legit copy of XP i have, bought in PC world and it has been verified that it is genuine software by microsoft.

There was a problem recently where one particular update decided that genuine copies of XP weren't actually genuine - perhaps that's what's happened here? If you install SP2, you may well find that you won't need many of the other updates, as they'll be part of SP2 anyway. Obviously, back up first, and create a new system restore point. Then try downloading SP2 and see how you get on with that. If everything seems fine, get your Windows Update to check what else you now need. With luck, you won't need many more updates after that. Download and install each one separately, restarting between each one, so that if anything does happen, you'll be able to pinpoint it.

All good advice here but, IF you get stuck trying to updgrade to SP2, try upgrading to SP1a first. There's a copy of it here for download ....

Thanks devizes18193 but that site has its pros and cons. Even admitted and detailed by the site itself here ....

    http://windizupdate.com/

I only recommnded that other site becasue I wanted to get SP1a quickly for achtunglady with just a couple of clicks.

However, achtunglady, you choose which you prefer. Whatever you find easier. Just so long as you get fixed one way or another.

    All the best.

I tried downloading SP2 on its own but the same thing happened, windows would not load up after i did it so i system restored it to before i downloaded it.

Like I suggested before....try installing SP1a first. Often SP2 will not install properly, if at all, on a computer that's not fully functional for some reason.
