Drive belt

Hi all :)
Hope you have all enjoyed your weekend :D

I have a question and don't know if I can explain it right for anyone to understand, but here goes.

I have a 2000 Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6.
It is a DuraTec engine.

On the right hand side of the top of the engine, there is a belt under the engine cover, it is only connected to one pulley and is only around a foot long.

The last few weeks I have noticed the belt making a slient noise and it appears oily.

Could this mean the belt need replacing?
There is NO oil leak as have checked so unsure what it could be.

    could be power steering or aircon.

    It's clearly an auxiliaries belt, the oil could be from anywhere, but do check to see if its all over the pulley wheels.

    If so then it's the shaft seal coming out of the engine (I assume from the top/head), check that the filler cap isn't bunged up with crap and that the breather hoses aren't blocked (as this would cause excess pressure and force oil out through seals.

    If not then it's must be dripping onto it from elsewhere.

    I sincerely hope its not that :eek:

    Having an oil and filter change next week, so will have a look this week ;)

    Just had a look on that link, and that is the same engine has mine pictured but its not on that side so isn't that.
    It's on the other side, the right.

    Underneath the plastic cover with the writing on (2.5 V6 24 Valve DOCH)

    I hope to hell it's nothing big, the engine is well looked after and is still like new and pulling like a horse!
    I always start it and leave it to idle for 10 minutes when first starting it in the morning before it's driven to allow minimal wear to the engine.


    I have just looked in the handbook, looks like it's the water pump belt, as it's driven on a separate one for safety I believe.

    I am going to take it off this week all being well and I get the chance (so many things on!)
    Depending how bad it is, I either change it this week, or get the belt and get the garage to change it next week on its oil and filter change as I may find I haven't all the tools required.

    Any reason why the belt might be damp though? :o

    if as you say it is water pump belt then it could be a slight leak on the water pump,coolant will leave an oily film.
    is there any trace of said oily substance anywhere else apart from the belt and have you noticed any fluid levels down slightly?

    Is this a good idea and does it save engine wear? Apart from wasting petrol idling for ten minutes, I thought it was better to drive off normally after starting the engine but not revving it too much while it is running cold.
