Another question - the appeal of these nokia phones or blackberrys would be the instant email.

However the HTC Wildfire on PAYG seems to be a good price and perhaps offers a lot more in terms of other features.

With that in mind would it be better for me to go for the wildfire (I take it I can just use the Gmail app for email?)

    Thanks for your responses!
htc phones do instant email too (push email), you can set it up for any email account like yahoo, hotmail, gmail or your work email etc and can get email instantly via pusk email or set it up for lower frequency on demand etc.

the desire and legend do have these features and i assume the wildfire has the same as well.

    Thanks,

I decided to go with Blackberry (haven't bought one yet) as I can get the emails abroad for free as well.

I assume with HTC I'd have to pay for internet use if I went abroad?

free or not would depend on the network abroad that provides your the network access! there is no such thing as a free lunch. loads of places are tightening up on RIM as they use servers external to other countrys law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies. places like india / dubai etc are already tightening the screws on RIM on this security and enforcement issue and loads of countries will follow suit.

I don't see how having a Blackberry can give you "free" email abroad. In order to get the emails to your phone you still need to use roamed data which is normally pretty expensive unless you use a local sim. Even the it is not "free".
