Some advice needed about my dodgy landlord...

I don't even know what it means to have a deposit protected...sorry! I'm a bit slow on all this stuff, I moved here at 16 years old so I was slightly naivee! Tbh, we won't get our deposit back either way because the house isn't in the condition we originally rented it in. Just general things like a leak from the shower has caused damage to the ceiling, the sofas are basically hanging (they actually give me a bad back they're so old now) a door handle is broken, a kitten sratched some carpet on the stairs, (though no fault of our own) the patio door is broken (rain water made it swell up and he refuses to repair it) etc etc. After 4 years here it was never gonna be perfect. So I'm not bothered about getting a deposit back, plus if I DID my ex partner has said they're entitled to it as they paid it originally, so unfortunatly it means saving from scratch!
After a long time off sick last year our savings are wiped out, so it's gonna take us aaaages to save up as we only have about £100 spare each month after all our bills, food, bus, petrol etc are paid for...so it's gonna take ages to save up the £1500 we'll need, and I'm so concerned about being thrown out in the meantime.0 -
After April 2007, all deposits on newly created tenancies should have been protected in one of the deposit schemes. The schemes exist to mediate disputes between landlords and tenants over deductions from the deposit. If the landlord hasn't done this, you can sue for the deposit plus 3 times the amount.
You're entitled to wear and tear on the property and unless the Landlord has a detailed inventory of the condition of the property, he will struggle to deduct anything from it so if you took him to court you would probably get it all back. Saying that, it costs money to do that so you'd have to choose your battles wisely.
The Landlord has left you in a horrible position.0 -
Yup.
One option we're considering is moving in with family to enable us to save up the bond/deposit etc for about 2 months but no one will have us and our 2 cats!Gahhh. This is so stressful.
All we're doing is arguing over it too, which is never good!

I've got a similar situation to the OP. I'm in rented accomodation with a landlord whose being chased by a debt company for money owed on council tax. i learned from a fellow tenant (thieving b**tard!) that the landlord owns at least 4 properties. he said the LL had 'our' property for some years now. i did a houseprice check and can't find this property on the list, a list which goes back to 1999. a month ago 5 policemen came knocking at 6am to speak to him, only to be told he lived locally, but not at this address. all the LL's letters come to this address and the LL hasn't been to collect rent from anyone in 2 weeks.
it could be he's on holiday
knowing my luck he is
though some of us are starting to wonder if it isn't something more serious. i'm unemployed and the LL hasn't\won't sign the LL declaration form so i can claim HB.
he's just turned up this evening. damn0 -
