Hello Folks,
I have bought a Dec 2003 new shape Micra 1.2 se for my wife. which has been going well for a week until it started to misfire. it splutters alot and sometimes dies out when driving. I got a diagnostic reading which said i needed a cam shaft sensor which i bought for £60 i changed it and still no good. so Then i bought a Crank shaft sensor which look differant its not plastic its go a silver end. So i cahnged it and same thing is still happening. I phoned the nissan dealer and they said i have to bring the car for something has to be done with the new sensor. But is this really the problem. Booked in tomorrow for timing chain change £600 so nissan tell me. help???

Thanks

Same thing was happening to me, it sounds like the oxygen/lambda sensors, they are not expensive to replace, shouldn't cost more than a hundred with fitting to replace the two of them

I'm no Nissan expert, in fact I'm no car expert but the problem sounds very similar to a problem I had with a Ford Ka. The problem on the Ka was solved by cleaning something called the idle control valve. That solved the issue for 3-4 months and it started again this time we had to replace the leads that plug onto the spark plugs. Not missed a beat since.

Taffy is yours the new shape Micra? did your engine management light come on. quite hard to start also. also whenon a journey it would just shut down and start again after 3 min or so! thanks for replys folks. as i am trying to get every detail before i might have to pay £600 which is tight enough at this min and time

No I have a focus, but it sounds like the problem I had with it, the idle control might be a cause as well, really try the cheapest options before going to the most expensive, and don't go to a main dealer to change the belt, that price is a fortune, try a local garage first, just make sure they fit nissan parts for this item though.

why are you replacing the timing chain? Is there a rattling sound? It could be coil packs, crank/cam/ lambda sensors, egr valve, idel control or even a dirty throttle body

you can clean the throttle body your self with carb cleaner. Just remove the air filter and spay it inside the opening opening the flap at the same time

Best advice is to get a garage to put it on a fault code reader computer, this will direct them to the problem and prevent you wasting any more money replacing parts that may not require changing!

I would try carb cleaner first, some vw's start misfireing becasue of dirty throttle body. A bit of carb cleaner when being serviced seems to help

Thanks for advice! So far what i have done is changed the cam shaft sensor which the computer was reading in the diagnostics. I have a small handheld which told me the fault.also double checked with a garage near by which read the same thing. So i paid £60 for cam shaft sensor which didnt solve the problem. Then i Bought a Crank shaft sensor which i could not install because you have to take it to a nissan dealer for them to amend something as its a new sonsor out. I have changed plugs air filter etc and cleaned it out with carb cleaner too. But when i pull the plug out of the crank shaft sensor the car will not splutter it runs perfect. Just no power when driving! But Nissan told me when the cam shaft sensor reading appears and everything has been changed then its down to the Timing chain! So i hope folks what should i do! Thanks again for your replies

I still stand by what I said, £600 to change the belt is far to much, you probably could get the same job for less than half the price using the same parts, you are not obligated to use nissan at all , and as the car is 7 years old I would stay well clear of a main dealer.
