Deposit for bathroom installation

Options
We have been quoted around £6500 for a new bathroom (just labour, all the suite and tiles supplied by us) which we feel is a lot but my main concern is that the fitter wants us to sign a contract and give him 25% of the amount within 3 days of signing, another 25% at the start of the job and another 25% half way through the job. Surely this can't be the norm? Can anyone shed any light on this?

    Get another quote

That amount is obscene for just labour, We have completed massive bathrooms from a bare shell for far less that that!!

Good evening: where are you located in the UK? How large is the bathroom? How much tiling? Type of tiling? Sanitaryware? Brassware? Pumps? In other words...not enough info to comment tbh. Post a detailed specification for further comment.

Get a couple more quotes and compare like for like. Terms and conditions will vary.

Your not going to give a psycotic quote are you
  • For clarification the bathroom requires:

    - removal of old suite and repair of plasterwork after tile removal (we will do tiles)

    - installation of new suite in same positions but we need a box built to house the back to wall toilet and semi-recessed basin. This will be the height of the basin and 25cm out from the wall. The bath also will have wall mounted taps in centre of long side

    - installation of wall mounted shower and shower screen

    - tiling of side of bath and boxed area around toliet and basin as well as some of the walls (12m sq in total). The majority will be 20cm x 10cm plain tiles and a 16cm wide mosaic border around the bathroom near the top

    - tiling of floor - only 2.5m sq in largish tiles

    - spotlights

£6500 seems expensive for this as the bathroom is pretty small but our main concern was the amount of money they want before they even do any work (50%). We also had a quote of just under £3000 but we weren't sure exactly what we wanted then so it is not detailed

Thank you for any advice anyone can offer, especially on the payment plan! We are in South London

All i can say is get a few quotes.

Seems expensive. We were quoted 3kish for new bathroom, But we ended up doing it ourselves.(worst thing was smashing the cast iron bath)

I would not like to give that kind if deposit out. Any tradesman we have had in to do anything we have never paid a deposit or cash up front. They have just never asked. I know that some tradesman do ask for a deposit.

Go back to the 3k guy...See what his terms are and full quote.

Sounds excessive to me. I sympathise though as I had quotes varying from £800 to £2.5k for labour alone.

Mine was to remove old bath/basin and loo. fit new bath, alter radiator pipe work to new postion in bathroom, build and fit new Shades furniture with built in cistern and loo, fit inset basin in same. tiles 2 walls, fit ply to floor then vinyl flooring. Fit new powershower and folding shower screen. He's also done some other plumbing work for me down in the utility room.

The charge is £150 a day labour + any bits (floor ply, copper pipe etc) he's done 4.5 days so far and has just a bit of tling left to do, put bath panel on, fit shower and screen.

I've not paid him a bean yet and he said not to until its done and i'm completely happy with it.
Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j

Good morning:south London is an expensive part of the world for skilled trades and the job is more involved than it initially appeared. Does the £6500 include VAT? Is it a bathroom installation company or an independent plumber? More quotes....fixed price only...I strongly advise you avoid paying a daily rate;)

For justjohn.... the OH and I don't have any mental health issues but perhaps some folks prefer to engage in 'psycotic quoting' (your spelling:eek:).

For the items listed there is little more than 7 days work and thats based on what we do which includes full plaster removal, walls dri-lined to provide flat, level and stable substrate, New 25mm plywood floor, All pipe work within room to be replaced with soldered copper tube and solvent weld waste, New ceiling double boarded with soundbloc and insualtion, wet area walls tanked

Not going to list prices that we charge but it is a lot less than your quote for a lot more work, Building materials cost for premium quality goods are around £700 per bathroom

You have been quoted at least double what it should be, if not more. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE. Get more quotes. On a job of this size, there is no need for any stage payments. Just pay on completion to your satisfaction.
