His death comes as no surprise at all - he was quite obviously never going to get better. The newsagents are piled high with "tribute" supplements by the Sunday papers - you'd almost think they had them prepared a while.
All the same he did add a certain colour and style to snooker, and for that I admired him. I don't know how he lost his fortune and why he was so alone despite having been twice married. His end was rather pathetic considering how he came from humble beginnings, became a world star but ended up in a much worse situation than from which he started.
It's very sad for many reasons.0 -
I'm really feeling for Marianne Faithful, how she must miss him.0

A genius in his prime with a snooker cue.
Sore on the drink, the wife and the potted plants.0 -
Why do people always talk down N.Ireland when people disagree about things. It's not just an Ulster thing, people & even own family members across the globe never see eye to eye on even the most basic of things....
I honestly don't think I'm talking down NI, perhaps it's the name calling in the thread and so soon after the thread about the twelfth which had to be removed because it got so nasty.0 -
now a Book of Condolence - please!!!0

The last lady he allegedly made love to.What's that about?
In the 70's and 80's he drew so many millions into watching snooker. His skill around the table was so amazing and he brought so much money into the sport.
Alas from the 90's on he imploded, very similarly to George Best. In latter years he let himself down on numerous occasions and that is sad, as it has tainted the memories of a truly magnificant sportsman of his day.0 -
it just goes to show how there is very little help for people in his situation, i wouldnt wish it on anyone, and i certainly wouldnt want it to happen to a family member.
i think he just couldnt handle the fame and money.
we need to keep this thread on topic, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing. you are entitled to your opinions, a lot of which i agree with, but i am looking at it from the point of view that if he had been a member of my family i wouldnt appreciate any of these truths people are saying just a few days after his death.0 -
Alex Higgins was always my favourite snooker player in the old days. Used to love to watch him on tv. My parents once met him in a restaurant and got his autograph for me which I still have to this day. Very sad but will not be forgotten.0
