Please please keep this thread as a tribute with no nasty comments.
If posters can't be polite I will have no choice but the report the thread and remove it.
Forum Etiquette

The MoneySavingExpert.com forum is a place to share info and tips with others, discuss MoneySaving and pick up ways to save. We hope you’ll enjoy it, but ask you to remember it’s a broad church with many different types of people. Follow these basic rules to make it a good place to be.
• Please be nice to all MoneySavers : There's no such thing as a stupid question and, even if you disagree, courtesy helps.
• Please be sensitive : This may be a web forum, but you’re still talking to other human beings. Repeatedly or harshly saying someone’s wrong, especially on boards like DebtFreeWannabe, Bankruptcy or Benefits, can lead to upset.

We’re proud that many people whose financial problems exacerbate mental health issues seek help in the forum, but this means you may be berating someone who’s clinically depressed. Please think twice before posting judgmental comments.
• Don't feed the trolls : Sadly the web has a habit of throwing up a very small but vocal number of trolls, people who are nasty or contrary just to get a rise out of you. If someone’s doing this, simply don’t reply, just report it to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com. If you get involved and fling mud back, you risk being barred from using the forum too.

Thank you all, have a good weekend :)

What a nasty, nasty thing to say, you old troll. Alex died of throat cancer, admittedly probably due to his smoking, but NOT alcoholism, More to the point, he was someone's son, someone's brother and someone's father. Find out the facts before you start slating others.

RIP Alex and heartfelt thoughts to his family and friends.

Not an old troll or a troll of any kind.

Just giving my opinion. Yes he died of cancer but was whinning about no one cared about him and how he was forgotten after all he had done.

Had he saved someone's life?
Changed the world for the better?

No, he played a game with a stick and his glory days long passed.
I infact know someone who had to deal with him and he was a selfish rude man.

Just my opinion and it may not be popular but this thread is yet another pretty sad indictment of NI as a society. We can't agree on anything and it's hard to see when we ever will.

There are times when I wonder what outsiders must think of us and it's not a good feeling. :(

I had the miss pleasure of meeting this man one night in a bar not long after I had major surgery; I was only out for a short time as it was my birthday.
Alec Higgins was sitting in our company with other people who I knew.
I made a comment to my husband that when he was finished his drink we would go home, Higgins butted in and asked why I was going home and I told him I was tired, he answered by saying “if you were my wife I would f**king shoot you” nice or what ?
Yes, he was a drunken nasty little man who thought the world owed him something

Higgins was a serious letdown.

He's not an idol of mine. Seriously flawed man. Much like myself. See no reason for the adulation though.

Why do people always talk down N.Ireland when people disagree about things. It's not just an Ulster thing, people & even own family members across the globe never see eye to eye on even the most basic of things....

Was Alex the greatest snooker player ever, maybe not, but he was certainly the most exciting when in his prime. It's a shame his personality didn't match up to the likes of Joey Dunlop. I remember watching him in a tournament in Larne where a young lad of about 8 went up to him afterwards for an autograph of his hero & Alex brushed him to the side & told him to **** off!!! Charming guy....

But he did bring joy to millions who watched him on telly & i'll join them in mourning his sad passing...........
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!

I have many friends outside of Northern Ireland and our situation is a source of humour for them in many respects. Much of what goes on here is incomprehensible to a lot of them. Then again, they live in civilised democracies. Not sure we can say the same for Northern Ireland.

As for Higgins, whilst it's sad that he has died and that his demise was so profound, I personally feel indifferent to it all. We seem to have a knack in Northern Ireland of latching on to great success stories which ultimately culminate in a sorry demise; George Best, the Titanic and now Alex Higgins.

Regardless, may he rest in peace.
