if you have registered with this service you will find this service only applies to british companies. they are getting round this by getting retailers from abroad to do their dirty work for them ie i recieved a phone call from angela in india offering me a free camera phone made by a british company she refused to give me her contact details so i could report this just saying she was calling on behalf of ????? mobile which is a british company that should be abiding to the tps guide lines but these guide lines dont apply to anyone who is not a registered company in britain
does anyone know how to stop these shysters phoning

1. Naming ????? mobile would be a good starting point.
2. Next time, inform the caller that your are very interested and could they hold on for a second whilst you turn the kettle off. An hour later, return to the phone and hang up.30 years, 217 days!0 -
Oh I do like that!0

Or.......................tell them they need the other Mr Hartley (your father/son), and you'll just put the phone down while you go and get him, and carry on with the rest of the day.
(Replace the phone next time you pass it)0 -

Although I,m listed on the telephone preference service I keep getting recorded calls with an american accent saying I have won a holiday in Olando Florida and all I have to do is dial 9 to hear the details. according to the TPS this would connect me to an 09 number where I would commence paying for the call.ie a scam.As a 1471 recall does,nt reveal the number there is nothing they can do to stop them say,s TPS. So beware0

Someone/something phones you and asks you to press 9 on your keypad? That magically connects you to a premium rate number that you haven't dialled but for which you will be billed? Sorry, I don't believe it. This has got to be some sort of urban myth.Reed0

If this is an urban myth ? It is one promoted by ICSTIS .Which is The Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services tel no 0800 500212 who gave me this explanation . I was directed to this organisation by the Telephone Preference list at tel no 0870 4443969. Urban Myth? I think not.Magic? Sorry I don,t believe in Magic0

Urban myth? I'm still inclined to think so. The ICSTIS number says their helpline is open - then puts you through to a recorded message! The emails claim people could be hit with a bill for £260 if they "press 9" and listen to a recorded message offering them a free all-expenses paid holiday. Another apparent scam relates to people phoning a "missed call" number beginning 0709. Anyone calling the number will be charged £50 a minute, warns the hoax email.
However, ICSTIS says this is all utter tosh and has urged anyone who receives one of these emails to bin it and not to pass it on.
Rasor - you may not believe in magic but you're still pretty credulous!Reed0 -
One still has to query why does the recorded message ask me to press 9?[I,m not talking about an E MAIL here].Is it a practical joke? Don,t think so, I don,t know any woman with American accents.I for one have no intention of finding out by pressing 9 ps I get this call about once a month. My daughter also gets them.0
