Mattress advice please?

Hello all...

We want to buy a new mattress for our king size, wooden bed and would really appreciate some advice.

We want to spend no more than about £450.00.

At the moment we have a mattress with a memory foam topper - but find the topper really hot to sleep on.

If we go for a proper memory foam mattress will this be the same?

We don't like firm mattresses, well I don't... the better half isn't so fussed! I have a problem with my hips that makes sleeping on a firm mattress painful after a while.

We also live in a fairly rural area, so if possible buying online would be preferable....

Any help would be very gratefully received :)

Many thanks
Wendy

Is your bed slatted, and if so how far apart are the slats?

A mattress with memory foam built in should in theory be cooler than one with a loose topper. This is because with the topper it sit's on top of all the quilting from the mattress, which insulates the memory foam and prevents heat dissipation. However this would depend on the actual mattress you bought. One that contains reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs, or has reflex foam only under the memory foam, then it will probably be hotter. If it has full size steel springs, and the memory foam is 2" deep then it will probably be cooler.

There are climate control fabrics available like Climasmart and Outlast.

Ikea have a very good 'what mattress is suitable for me' section + they will allow you to change the mattress within 90 days if you think you have bought the wrong one. Have you considered getting a 180cm bed, then you and your husband can both have single mattresses to your own liking?

Thank you both for such quick replies!

Murphy - good suggestion about the bed, but unfortunately room not big enough for larger size. I'm not sure, but think Ikea mattresses only fit Ikea beds - again, I'm not sure but will check it out - thank you for the suggestion.

Tim - The slats look to be just under 3" apart. Taking into account what you said I did a search on mattresses with pocket spring and memory foam and came up with this one http://www.mattressman.co.uk/rest_assured/mattresses/mattresses/king_size/P3441S0/restapocket_1400_memory.aspx Do you know if this would be a good mattress and also do you know anything about the company?

Thanks both of you for your help - it is much appreciated.

I wouldn't recommend Ikea mattresses as their build quality is terrible.

I don't know if you realise, but Rest Assured is part of the Silentnight group. You should do a search for them in the MSE forums before you even consider them.

Also the mattress is non turn, so it won't have any memory foam on the bottom to spread the weight out over the slats, making it unsuitable for slatted beds.

From what I understand Mattressman don't give a satisfaction guarantee.

Can't say about that mattress, but have bought from that site & was very pleased with the quality of the mattress (& it was only about £250 I think). It was on quidco too. [edit-just checked & it still is @6%]

They aren't really cheap, so even with quidco, you could still end up paying more than you would elswhere.

You are better off staying away from big brands if you want good quality for a good price.

Thanks all, this is just the sort of advice I need before going out and splurging money and making a mistake - much appreciated!

It's a bit of a mine field isn't it - the thing is, getting a good nights sleep is the most important thing for me at the moment (health and all that) so I really want to make the best choice.

Tim - I didn't realise that I should look at a different mattress for a slatted bed! Do you have a brand or company you can reccommend so I can take a look?

Once again, thanks all - this is the forum working at it's best

    Hi,

We have a leather bed with sprung slats and bought a memory foam one off Ebay. After months and months of searching around we decided we liked one in Harveys which was around £500 if i remember correctly. We then just bought it and hoped for the best! Fab it is and i love it, dh wasn't so sure at first as had read they can be warm but we have had it 3 years now and still think it is the comfiest mattress i have ever slept on! After about a year the cover which is fully washable split a bit down the side, i emailed the seller who fully replaced the whole thing no questions asked so was very impressed.

    Good luck with your search!

Pocket sprung only, or non turn pocket sprung and memory foam mattresses aren't generally suitable for slatted beds, as the springs all work independently, and try to push down between the slats. However there is a way around this problem.

I can't recommend any brands or retailers on MSE, as it could be viewed as advertising. However, if I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.
